BREAKDOWN

Project Description
We Are Proud to Present a Presentation About the Herero of Namibia, Formerly Known as Southwest Africa, From the German Südwestafrika, Between the Years 1884–1915 by Jackie Sibblies Drury follows a group of actors struggling to adequately tell the story of the Herero people. Though the play covers a serious topic, it does so through the lens of humor and explores the revelations the characters have about history, race, and theatre during their rehearsals. Ultimately the play takes a dark turn as the American wounds and the historical tragedy overlap within this ensemble’s own process. Music, comedy, violence, and politics all blend in this metatheatrical masterpiece.

Character Breakdown/Descriptions
These are the roles to be played by professionals. The company will include student actors to be cast at later auditions.

Actor 6 / Black Woman – a Black woman in her 20’s, the unofficial leader of a student theater troupe, generous and kind but still authoritative, sharp and “sassy”

Actor 1 / White Man – a White man in his 20’s, educated well-meaning though casually inflicts microaggressions, charming and “all American”, at the end a darkness/violence bubbles up from his improv game which scares himself and everyone else

Actor 2 / Black Man – a Black man in his 20’s, a Hotep-type student more interested in the history of the show than the actual acting, masculine and confident but not lacking a sense of humor

**a sense of musicality and ability to improv is necessary for all roles
