BREAKDOWN

PRINCE/DELEGATE
Male, 30’s.
PRINCE - A suitor to the HEIRESS--the PRINCE is wealthy, westernized, and slick. He’s used to getting whatever he wants with very little effort. An expert at leveraging his privilege and wealth; he openly expresses his disdain for Xinjiang and it’s “provinciality.”
DELEGATE - Represents the interests of the Chinese government in the movie partnership with the American producers. He’s tight-lipped, pragmatic, and finds the entire notion of interpreting stories to be suspect at best. A man who knows how to wield the power that he has.

COMMANDER/DIRECTOR
Male, 40’s
COMMANDER - A suitor to the HEIRESS--The commander is proud, impatient, and prone to violence. He’s frank bordering on vulgar in his dealings with his would-be wife. A military man who’s proven his loyalty to the HEIRESS’s father and risen in the ranks despite his status as an ethnic minority.
DIRECTOR - A serious and inquisitive film maker; committed to telling the “truth” with his work and maintaining the integrity of his film while trying to be respectful of local culture and politics. Doesn’t quite understand the cultural gap that he’s attempting to bridge, but is brimming with good intentions.

XIAO/VICE CENSOR/ASSISTANT
Male, 20 - 30
XIAO - A young, Asian-American man in his 20’s living in Brooklyn after a massive environmental disaster. He’s a film buff who is working hard to calm his partner as alarms blare outside their shared apartment.
VICE CENSOR - Serves the HEIRESS and her father with great loyalty. He’s shrewd, observant, and trustworthy. Unlike the other men, he is good at keeping his mouth shut and flying under the radar until he finds the exact right moment to strike.
ASSISTANT - Works on movie set; young, professional, eager to learn. Becomes increasingly thoughtful about the ethics of storytelling as filming progresses.

MEI/MISTRESS/LIASON
Female, 20-30
MEI - A young, Asian-American woman living in Brooklyn after a massive environmental disaster. She’s frightened for the future, but determined to face reality rather than hiding in stories or myths from the past. Smart, curious, cultured.
MISTRESS - The serving woman to the HEIRESS and mistress of the reigning general of Xinjiang. She’s privy to many secrets, but is excellent at playing her cards close to her chest. Brave, self-possessed, observant. She’s used her skill and feminine wiles to secure a position of high esteem and trust despite being an ethnic and religious minority.
LIASON - An employee of the Chinese government who’s been tasked with cultural translation for the American movie team. She’s quiet and observant, however when she does speak, she reveals a razor-sharp intellect and the ability to topple arguments with only a few pointed questions.
