Set in the UK 2009-11, The Untitled JT Rogers Play tells the story of the discovery and investigation of The News International phone hacking scandal in the UK.
Note: Except for the actors playing Tom Watson and Rebekah Brooks, all actors will play multiple roles in addition to the roles listed below. All actors must be adept with a variety of UK accents, as befits most of the characters in the play.
TOM WATSON – 40s. Male. Any ethnicity. Member of Parliament for West Bromwich East, in the north of England. A charismatic Northerner proud of his roots. Rumpled and gregarious, he rarely stops moving or talking. Tom is initially hesitant to be drawn into a new conflict with Rebekah Brooks, but after he begins to see the extent of the damage being done, he plunges in. Tom is driven by two burning desires: to see justice for the victims of News International and to bring down its leader, Rebekah Brooks, for almost destroying his family and career.
REBEKAH BROOKS - Late 30s-Mid 40s. Female. Any ethnicity. Chief Executive of News International. Brilliant, tactical, formidable, and charismatic, she worked her way up from newspaper secretary to Editor-in-chief of News of the World and The Sun, tabloid newspapers that ruthlessly invaded the privacy of countless people. Recently appointed CEO of News International, she is Rupert Murdoch’s right hand. Prime ministers court her favor out of fear of what she will do to them if they cross her. She is the general of an army made up entirely of men, most of whom both resent and fear her. She can afford to show no weakness, nor afford her enemies any mercy.
MARTIN HICKMAN (40s). Male. Any ethnicity. Reporter for The Independent. A Londoner and college mate of Tom’s who’s pulled by his old friend into investigating the corrupt practices of News International. Introspective and not aggressive by nature, he’s finally forced to step outside his comfort zone and go on the attack.
CHRIS BRYANT (40s). Male. Any ethnicity. Member of Parliament, wry and fearless, an out gay politician when such a thing was rare in the UK. Possessing a caustic wit and impressive karaoke skills, he is arguably the smartest MP in the Labour Party. His career and life were nearly ruined earlier by Rebekah Brooks and her newspapers, Chris must now be convinced to join forces with Tom, his personal and political enemy. CAST
CHARLOTTE HARRIS (30s). Female. Any ethnicity. Attorney for numerous victims of the smear campaigns, lies, and phone hacking perpetrated by News International. Ambitious and funny, she is fearless and willing to say anything to anyone. Fiercely dedicated to getting justice for her clients, Charlotte has been searching for colleagues to join her in taking the fight to Rebekah Brooks.
NICK DAVIES (Mid-Late 50s). Male. Any ethnicity. Respected investigative reporter for the Guardian. He’s spent much of his career exposing the lies and corruption at the heart of the News International empire, only to see his life’s work lead to little change. Coiled, often seething; he does not suffer fools. Intensely smart, unafraid of authority, a bit of a maverick, personally and intellectually.
MAX MOSLEY (60s) Male. Any ethnicity. President of FIA, the organizing body for Formula One Racing. Max is reserved and elegantly patrician, with a love of fast cars – he’s also infamous for his wild sex life. Now in his later years, he’s amazed and bemused to find himself, a life-long Tory, become radicalized as he seeks to fight against the corrupting influence of News International. CAST
SIOBHAN WATSON (30s). Female. Any ethnicity. Married to Tom, she’s also a proud Northerner. She provides wise counsel to Tom and he’s reliant on her insight, political and personal. Siobhan has borne the brunt of Rebekah’s recent attempts to destroy Tom and thus her family. Wary, witty, and with a will of iron. CAST
JAMES MURDOCH (Mid-Late 30s). Male. Any ethnicity. Chief Executive, Newscorp Asia and Europe. Born in the UK and high school and college educated in the US, son and heir apparent to Rupert Murdoch’s companies. James has recently arrived in the UK to run his father’s businesses. Rebekah’s rival for his father’s influence and attention, James holds very different ideas about the future of News International. He finds the clubby, small-minded world of British politics and print journalism provincial and in need of tearing down.
TOM CRONE (50s-60s) Male. Any ethnicity. News International’s head lawyer, the power behind the throne. He is man in the corner who watches, says little, but then ensures what he wants to happen, happens. Reserved, hooded, and cool. When he does speak, you would be wise to listen. Ruthless, precise, the organization’s enforcer.
CHARLIE BROOKS (Mid-Late 30s). Male. Any ethnicity. Rebekah’s husband and a glamourous member of the British ruling class. He is content to take a back seat to his dazzling spouse, until their lives start to unravel.
GORDON BROWN (50s-60s). Male. Any ethnicity. Prime Minister of the UK. Scottish. Dark and brooding, uncomfortable with the necessary gladhanding and schmoozing of political life. He and Tom go far back, but Tom’s crusade against News International eventually pulls the two men apart. CAST
KARIE (40s-50s). Female. Any ethnicity. Tom’s office manager. Warm, sensible, knows Tom well and can stay a step ahead of him. Organized and detail-oriented.
