WOMEN

JOSEPHINE MONAGHAN/JO MONAGHAN
age 18-33 – lyric soprano, top note G . The teenage Josephine is optimistic and impetuous. Later, disguised as a man, she kills off both her female identity and her heart. In Idaho, Jo becomes the business partner and confidant of the miner Jordan Ellis—and attracts Jordan’s wife, Sara, with his sensitivity. Jo may not say much, but you always know where he stands.

SARA STEWART ELLIS
age 17-32 - soprano, top note E . Vivacious, restless, decent, and kind, she falls in love with Jo, but marries Jordan when it’s clear that Jo won’t return her feelings.

KATE MONAGHAN/JEANNIE KELLY
20s to 30s . Jo’s sister, who cares deeply for Jo but only wants to do what’s best for Jo’s child. Double cast with Jeannie Kelly, a housewife, as well as other small roles.

MARIAN CUMMINGS, CORA REILLY
50s. A storekeeper who’s been in this town long enough to be tough as nails, she secretly has a soft heart. Double cast with Cora Reilly, a housewife, as well as other small roles.

CAROLINE WILLIAMS, ARLA STRATTON
40s to 50s . The owner of the town saloon, she raised Sara and is a surrogate mother to the whole community. Double cast with Arla Stratton, a housewife, as well as other small roles.

MEN

JORDAN ELLIS
age 24-39 - baritone, top note F. Self-made, sometimes gruff and impersonal—but he’s a good man with a big heart. His love for Sarah is deep and genuine; although he knows that she doesn’t feel the same way about him, he holds on to it as a kind of faith.

TIN MAN WONG
24 years old (Act II only) tenor, top note E. A Chinese immigrant, his entire family was brutally killed by miners when he was a child. He becomes the object of racist attacks when the economy suffers and mines start to close. He and Jo recognize each other—he is the only character who intuits her secret—and they also feel a genuine physical attraction. He’s preternaturally calm and wise.

THOMAS HARRISON, ETHAN MCCLELLAN
50s. A peddler with good intentions but without the spine to carry through on them, he’s just passing through. Double cast with Ethan McClellan, the former mayor, as well as other small roles.

LEE GIBBS, DANIEL LEARY
20s to 40s. A villainous soldier, double cast with a racist miner and others.

PERCY CORCORAN, WALTER TRAVERS

HUCKSTER, HORNER BURNS, ERNIE STRATTON
20s to 40s. A disreputable soldier who thinks the world owes him big. Double cast with a miner and others.
