SEVEN HOMELESS MAMMOTHS WANDER NEW ENGLAND
By Madeleine George

Directed by Ken Rus Schmoll

1st Rehearsal: 9/20/11. Runs: 10/15/11 - 11/13/11 (Possible extension to 11/20/11)

Seeking:

The Caretaker:

Male. The guardian and long-time custodian of a small college’s small natural history museum. He has had his job forever, making his appointed rounds and never missing a day of work. He does crossword puzzles and carries a flask. When he speaks, it is in the voice of the local newspaper. Very dry. 60s-70s.

Early Man 1:

Male. At first glance, a Neanderthal in a small-town museum diorama. But there is something funny about him: he’s sort of Paleolithic and sort of contemporary at the same time—an early hominid from a suburban rec room. When he speaks, it is in the easy, contemporary voice of a young college student. Early 20s.

Dean Wreen, née Cindy:

Female. Academic soft-butch: loafers, pleated pants, blazer. She has spent her career at the same small college in New England. Once a scholar, she has chosen a certain comfort, moving into administration and fundraising. Great facility with language and rhetoric: she becomes radiant with the pleasure of complaint. She has known Greer for 20 years and lived with her for 15; her new girlfriend is Andromeda, a former student. 40s-50s.

Greer, née Gail:

Female. Intellectual femme: Katha Pollitt glam meets LL Bean practical. A professor of philosophy, she exudes a steady, cynical calm. She has been fighting cancer; it recently came back. While undergoing treatment, she has moved back in with her ex-girlfriend, Dean Wreen. 40s-50s.

Andromeda, née Andrea:

Female. Dean Wreen’s former student and now her girlfriend. She studied anthro and women’s and gender studies and is now a yogini. Friendly, open, sincere, spiritual, and physical, it’s hard not to fall in love with her. 20s.

Early Man 2:

Female. At first glance, a Neanderthal in a small-town museum diorama. But there is something funny about her: she’s sort of Paleolithic and sort of contemporary at the same time—an early hominid from a suburban rec room. When she speaks, it is in the easy, contemporary voice of a young college student. Early 20s.

Seeking:

Johnny D’Amato:

Italian-American man, from a big family. A police officer, because that was essentially the family business. He wants kids, a house with a backyard—the works. Easy-going, traditional, and kind, but not always willing to make his own choices. Mid-to-late 20s. Tenor. Low A-high G#

Henry Arden:

Male. Strong, comfortable with physical activity and working with his hands—he built the house he lived in with his wife. When things are awkward, he passes around his flask. Must be believable as a former baseball player. 60s-80s. Baritone. Low G to high F

Annie Freidkin:

Jewish woman. Adventurous and eager to see the world, and to do good in the world. She’s confident about her work; less confident about her life and saying what she wants. When she fell in love, it surprised her. She’s wary of commitment. Mid-to-late 20s. Soprano. Low A to high G

Luisa Arden:

Presbyterian woman. She’s radiant, but she dismisses the compliment. Gracious and warm with a sly sense of humor, but emotionally contained. 60s-80s. Alto. Low G to high F
