MEN
Mole – Early 20s
No one likes the Mole and he knows it. But then he gets an idea that there is a home for him somewhere, a place where Moles are liked and there are tinkly bells and the sound of Christmas carols. And he sets off on a quest to find where he belongs. He is instinctively wise and he refuses to feel sorry for himself as he travels through the Willows in search of home; and in spite of the fact that everyone he meets is shocked to meet a Mole, it turns out he is indeed very likeable.
Water Rat – 20s
His boat is the most precious thing in the world to him. He is always ready to go someplace new, and learn something new—though he wants to stay near the river and other familiar boundaries and not have to venture into the Wide World. Everybody knows him in the Willows but who knows him well? Is he lonely, is he a misunderstood artist in a world that has relegated him to less airy work? Yes, yes he is. Though he can be snarly one minute and lost in poetry another, Rat is also courageous, and a good friend.
Mr. Toad – 30s to 40s
He is Toad of Toad Hall. He was born into wealth and is able to indulge his obsessions with grown-up toys, like speed boats and, especially, sport cars. He’s spoiled and conceited, but also indomitable and cheerful—even when everyone around him knows that a crash is around the corner.
Dr. Badger – 30s to 50s
An intellectual who is given to pronouncements rather than deep insights, he is slow-moving. His life is spent surrounded by books, though he doesn’t necessarily know as much as he thinks he knows. He is the Mayor of the Willows but he makes Rat do most of the hard work so he can have time to read and think. That’s what really smart people do. They think. A lot.
Little Portly – Teens to Early 20s
He is Mrs. Otter’s son. He loves to eat and wants to be a chef when he grows up—putting different foods together is his way of being an artist. He knows his own mind. He’s rebelling against the family tradition of being a fisherman, but not rebelling against his family.
Weasel One – Any Age
Obsessed with stuff, driven by primal need, the Weasels are a bit of an Abbott and Costello duo (a big weasel and a small/wiry one), except neither is the smart one.
WOMEN
Mrs. Otter – 30s to 50s
She has a strong work ethic, but her view of the world is based on tradition—she prizes routine, rather than imagination. She is passionately devoted to the idea of making her son Portly into the best possible fisherman who has ever lived in the Willows.
Weasel Two – Any Age
Obsessed with stuff, driven by primal need, the Weasels are a bit of an Abbott and Costello duo (a big weasel and a small/wiry one), except neither is the smart one.
