BREAKDOWN

TURN OF THE SCREW: Based on the provocative tale of suspense, horror and repressed sexuality, this adaptation gives the famous story yet another turn of its own. A young governess journeys to a lonely English manor house to care for two recently orphaned children. But she is not their first governess. Her predecessor, Miss Jessel, drowned herself when she became pregnant by the sadistic valet, Peter Quint, who was himself found dead soon after under mysterious circumstances. Now the new governess has begun to see the specters of Quint and Jessel haunting the children, and she must find a way to stop the fiends before it is too late. But one frightening question tortures the would-be heroine: Are the ghosts real, or are they the product of her own fevered imagination? Performed by 2 actors.

SEEKING:
GOVERNESS: Any race. Between 20 and 25. A young Victorian woman. Proper, capable, romantic, naive. She's just been hired for her first job as governess to 2 orphaned children on a large country estate. The daughter of a stern minister, she's had a very sheltered upbringing and has little in the way of life experience. Her new job puts an immense responsibility on her, since her employer—the children's uncle—has demanded not to be bothered with their problems. She is extremely protective and hopes to win her employer’s approval. She views herself as a zealous guardian, a heroine facing dark forces.

THIS ROLE IS CAST:
MAN: Any race. Between 35 and 55. Plays the Uncle, a charming bachelor who has no interest in caring for his orphaned niece and nephew and so hires the governess; Mrs. Grouse, the children's housekeeper, a kind-hearted but overwrought woman who initially supports the governess but grows increasingly wary of her mental stability; and ten-year old Miles, one of the orphans—a sweet but troubled boy who's been unexpectedly expelled from school for possible sexual misconduct.
