Equity actors for roles in Maltz Jupiter Theatre's productions of A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM, SWEET CHARITY, and OLIVER! (see breakdown).

PREPARATION

Please prepare 1 song in the style of the show you'd like to audition for and 1 monologue no more than 2 minutes long. An accompanist will be provided. Please bring 3 copies of your headshot and resume stapled together.

A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM

PSEUDOLUS: Male or Female-Identifying. Age 35-60, a Roman slave owned by Hero, who seeks to win his freedom by helping his young master win the heart of Philia. Quick-witted, scheming, childlike spirit, vocal range: A2- A4.

HERO: Male-Identifying. Age 20-30, the handsome young son of Senex and Dominia, he falls in love with Philia and agrees to give Pseudolus his freedom if he can help Hero woo her. Practical, privileged, romantic, vocal range B2-G4.

PHILIA: Female-Identifying. Early 20’s, a virgin courtesan-in-training in the House of Lycus whom we also find out is Erronius' daughter. She is promised to Miles but loves Hero and promises he will always have her heart. Young, pretty, not too bright, devoted, an archetypal ingénue, vocal range B3- G5.

SENEX: Male-Identifying. 45-60, an old man still attracted to wine, women, and song. Father to Hero and henpecked husband to Domina, vocal range B2-G4.

DOMINIA: Female-Identifying. 40-50, Senex's wife, outwardly controlling, demanding, and manipulative, but who also loves her husband deep down, vocal range B3-F5.

HYSTERIUM: Male-Identifying. 30-55, the chief slave in the House of Senex, believes he is in control but is actually Pseudolus' puppet to carry out his schemes. Anxious, conservative, loyal, he desperately wants everything to be in order, vocal range D4-G5.

MILES GLORIOSUS: Male-identifying. 25-35, the archetype of the braggart soldier, a captain in the Roman army to whom Marcus Lycus has promised Philia. Commanding, boastful, manly, and strong, vocal range B3- F5.

MARCUS LYCUS: Male-identifying. 35-50, the owner of the house of Courtesans, always out to make a profit, but also wants to provide good on what his business offers, vocal range A3-F5.

ERRONIUS: Male-identifying. 45+, A befuddled old man, who is partially blind, searching for his lost children, vocal range B2-G4.

COURTESANS: (GYMNASIA, TINTINABULA, GEMINAE TWINS, PANACEA, VIBRATA) Female-identifying, any ethnicities. 20-35, the women of the House of Lycus, the neighborhood brothel. Gorgeous, sexy, and alluring. Every man’s fantasy. Fantastic dancers and good singers with comedic timing. Gymnastics/acrobatic skills a plus.

PROTEANS: Male-identifying. 20-40, slaves, citizens, soldiers and eunuchs. Dance ability a plus. Athletic, acrobatic, and tumbling skills a plus. Good singers.

CHARITY HOPE VALENTINE: (FEMALE, 20-35, LATIN-X) Down-on-her-luck, but always hopeful. A dancehall hostess who dreams of finding true love. Determined, fun, quirky, funny, despairing, optimistic. A very strong dancer. Alto/Mezzo (E3-C#5)

HELENE: (FEMALE, 20-35, AFRICAN AMERICAN) Sultry and sassy dancer at the Fandango Ballroom; one of Charity’s best friends. Been around the block a bit. Straight talking, feisty, confident, and streetwise. A strong dancer. Mezzo with a big belty sound (F3-C#5)

NICKIE: (FEMALE, 30-45, ANY ETHNICITY) Brassy New Yorker. A dancer at the Fandango Ballroom. One of Charity’s close friends. She has seen it all and is quick to offer advice to Charity and the other girls. A very strong dancer. Mezzo with a strong belt (F3-C#5)

OSCAR LINDQUIST: (MALE, 25-40, ANY ETHNICITY) A square, claustrophobic, educated, well-spoken, shy, repressed and gawky man. Works as an actuary (the most boring job in the world). A reluctant romantic. Strong physical comedy. Vocal Range: (B2-Gb4)

VITTORIO VIDAL: (MALE, 30-45, WHITE) Very handsome, international film star. Italian. Knows his place in the world. Charismatic and authoritative. Has a way with the ladies and hot-headed wife named Ursula. Baritone with an operatic sound (Bb2-G4)

HERMAN: (MALE, 35-55, ANY ETHNICITY) Owner of Fandango Ballroom. A tough taskmaster. Grizzled and annoyed at everything but with a heart of gold. A strong tenor (E3-B4)

URSULA MARCH/ENSEMBLE: (FEMALE, 25-35, ANY ETHNICITY) Beautiful, hot-headed, and jealous wife of Italian movie star, Vittorio Vidal. A flair for the dramatic. A strong dancer.

DADDY BRUBECK/ENSEMBLE: (MALE, 25-40, AFRICAN AMERICAN) A true hippie, founder and leader of the Rhythm of Life Church. A spiritual, enigmatic, but laid-back kind of guy. A strong dancer (C3-E4)

FEMALE/MALE ENSEMBLE: (25-40, ANY ETHNICITY) Strong performers. Multiple featured roles with ease. All sing well and are very strong dancers. From the ensemble we will be selecting two singers for the following parts; SOLO TENOR (F#3-D#4) and ROSIE (A3- Bb4).

OLIVER!

OLIVER TWIST: An orphan workhouse boy, age range 8-13, singer (smooth boyish soprano). British (not cockney) accent, bright and innocent.

ARTFUL DODGER: A street kid, age range 13-18, good singer/dancer. Cockney accent. Very energetic, highly personable, funny, intelligent, and savvy beyond his years. Fagin’s “right hand man.”

FAGIN: Middle aged male. Leader of a children’s band of thieves, age 40-60s. Good singer, cockney accent. Described as devious, a user, sly fox, con man, but very personable.

NANCY: When she was younger she worked for Fagin, now a barmaid. Age range 20s-40. Singer (good belt) with movement skills. Cockney accent. Good heart, intelligent, longs for a better life.

BILL SYKES: Also worked for Fagin when he was a youth now a feared master criminal. Age range 20s-40. Cockney accent. Baritone-Bass. A sociopath and killer who looks out only for himself.

MR. BUMBLE: The Master of the Workhouse, age range 30s-50s. Strong singer (legit tenor). Cockney accent. A large, pompous and corrupt bureaucrat.

WIDOW CORNEY: The Mistress of the Workhouse, age range 30s-50s. Good singer (soprano/belt). Cockney accent. Sharp tongued, also corrupt.

MR SOWERBERRY/MR BROWNLOW: Mr. Sowerberry is a creepy alcoholic undertaker who buys Oliver from Bumble to work in the funeral home as a coffin follower. Brownlow is a kindly upper class older gentleman. Age range 40s-60, good singer (baritone).

MRS SOWERBERRY/OLD SALLY: Mrs. Sowerberry is the undertaker’s wife, cockney accent, severe, more business savvy than her husband. Old Sally is an elderly pauper who served as the nurse at Oliver’s birth. 30s-40s, good singer (mezzo)

CHARLOTTE/MRS BEDWIN: Sowerberry’s daughter in her late teens, torments Oliver while flirtatious with Noah Claypool. Cockney accent. Mrs. Bedwin is a British housekeeper who works for Mr. Brownlow. Warm personality. 20-30

Requirement for proof of vaccination/negative test.

Everyone entering the audition venue (i.e., venue employees, Equity members, non-members, casting personnel, creatives, producers, musicians, COVID Safety Managers, etc.) will be required to undergo a symptom check and provide one of the following prior to entry into the venue:

- Proof of full vaccination. “Fully vaccinated,” as defined by the CDC, is more than 14 calendar days following receipt of a final dose of an FDA or World Health Organization authorized or approved vaccine.

Two-ply cloth face masks, surgical masks, singer’s masks and respirators (N95, KN95 or KF94) will be allowed for face coverings. Single-ply face masks, gaiters and bandanas are not acceptable face coverings. Everyone in the holding room and audition room will always wear a face covering as described above, except for the actor when they are actively auditioning. The time spent unmasked should be as minimal as possible. Face coverings must be worn correctly (covering the nose and mouth). If the risk level for Palm Beach County is trending upwards and may rise to High (Red) we will contact members with appointments at least 24 hours before the first audition appointment time to let them know there is a chance that the auditions Revised March 14, 2022 may need to be postponed or cancelled. All members with appointments will be notified if the auditions must be postponed or cancelled.

We encourage members to prepare for their audition at home, to the extent that they can (e.g., get dressed, hair/make-up, etc.) to avoid crowding in bathrooms and dressing rooms. Additional information required in notice:

Holding/Audition room information:

The audition room is 1500 square feet and can accommodate no more than 15 individuals at a time.

The holding room is 1300 square feet and can accommodate no more than 36 individuals at a time.
