DREAMGIRLS
All Principal Roles Are Open (with the exception of Effie Melody White):
DEENA JONES – African American woman, 20-30. The Dreamette who is young, thin, naïve and impressionable. The most beautiful member of the dreams. Happy singing backup to Effie until Curtis puts her in the lead and grooms her as star of the group. Mezzo, big full belt.
LORRELL ROBINSON – African American woman, 20-30. The third member of The Dreams. She is the Dreamette who has her eye on Jimmy Early. Sexy, flirtatious girl from the projects of Detroit who has been singing with her best friends Effie and Deena for years. Carries on an affair with Jimmy Early,who refuses to leave his wife for her. Soprano, on top of most triad harmony, big full belt.
CURTIS TAYLOR, JR. – African American man, 30-40. Handsome, and very sexy. A shady businessman who takes an interest in the Dreams & Jimmy Early. He oversees the rise to stardom of The Dreams. Initially warm and approachable but becomes hardened by wealth and power and the need for control. Baritone.
JAMES “THUNDER” EARLY – African American man, 30-40. An R & B star like James Brown. The
Dreamettes become his backup singers. A charismatic character with high energy. Rock and R
& B tenor.
C.C. WHITE – African American man, 20-35. Effie’s brother and a songwriter. Endearing and soft-spoken, he tries to do what’s best but slowly gives up his ideals to Curtis’ controlling vision. High baritone.
MICHELLE MORRIS – African American woman, 20-30. Effie’s replacement in the Dreams. Thin and beautiful, she sings bottom in the harmonies. Mezzosoprano, big belt. Must move well. MARTY – African American man, 30-45, street savvy, long-time manager who oversaw Jimmy’s career and rise to R & B stardom. Represents an earlier age of black entertainment. At odds with Curtis and his ideas and schemes. Later oversees Effie’s comeback. Baritone.
CATS
All Actors playing the roles will wear full make-up, and cat suits for the production: BUSTOPHER JONES/ASPARAGUS/GROWLTIGER - The ultimate cat about town, he’s a connoisseur of fine dining. Enjoying to eat out at the best restaurants which has caused him to be a “twenty five pounder” who is “putting on weight everyday!”
MISTOFFELEES - The Magical Mr. Mistoffelees! The original conjuring cat, he’s the tribe’s magician and always knows how to entertain either with a card trick, a dice or other many of magic! It is he who saves Old Deuteronomy and returns him from Macavity’s evil clutches. OLD DEUTERONOMY - The leader of the Jellicles, he has been around for a very long time,
“before Queen Victoria’s accession”. He is captured by Macavity during the Jellicle ball and he is rescued by Mistoffelees.
GRIZABELLA - The glamour cat who left the tribe to experience the outside world and who know wants to come back. However, no one will accept her, only the young kittens see her for who she really is and continually try to reach out to her. It is Victoria who eventually touches her and reunites Grizabellawith the tribe. It is she who is then chosen by Old Deuteronomy to be reborn and journey to the Heavyside layer.
MUNKUSTRAP - He is the leader of the cats in Deuteronomy’s absence. When he grows older and Old Deuteronomy passes on, it is probably Munkustrapwho will assume his position as leader. He like to be in charge and is the one frequently telling the stories or directing the other cats. It is rumoured that he and Demeter have a relationship but again, who knows!!
RUM TUM TUGGER - The Rum Tum Tugger is a curious cat. Whatever you offer him, he’ll want the opposite! The Tugger is also a bit of a playboy, flirting with all the females and quite happily leading them on.
THE LITTLE MERMAID
ARIEL - The heroine of the story who longs to be human. Strong Soprano Belter, Dynamic
Performer,
Excellent Pantomime Actress.
PRINCE ERIC - Adventurous Prince who captures Ariel's Heart. Charming performer with a sensitive nature
Strong Actor, Tenor.
SEBASTIAN (Male or Female) - Meticulous and anxious crab who tries to keep Ariel safe. Strong singer and
actor.
FLOUNDER (Male or Female) - Ariel's sincere and sensitive best friend who is loyal to the end. Spunky
Singer/Actor.
KING TRITON - Rules the sea and is a force to be reckoned with. Commands the stage as a strong leader
but also has the tenderness like a parent would. Mature, Strong Actor.
URSULA - Manipulative Sea Witch who tries to overthrow King Triton. Cunning and devious and will stop
at nothing to get what she wants. Mature Performer who can bring out this villian's humor while finding
texture in Ursula's complexity. Very Strong Singer and Actor.
FLOTSAM and JETSAM (Male or Female) Ursula's slippery spies. Electric eels who are sinister, sneaky,
underhanded, and devious. Singers/Actors.
SCUTTLE - Know-it-all seagull who serves as Ariel's expert on humans, funny, and up-beat. Good comedic
timing and needs to have fun with his eccentricities. Singer/Actor.
GRIMSBY - Prince Eric's prim and proper valet who is rigid and constantly trying to guide Prince Eric towards the throne. Strong Actor who sings.
CHEF LOUIS (Male or Female) Over-the-top head chef in the palace who is always wild and frenetic.
Strong Comedic Singer and Actor.
WHITE CHRISTMAS All Roles are Open:
Auditions for the double casted juvenile role of Susan Waverly will be in the fall.
BOB WALLACE [Late 20s to Mid-30s; Baritone] A major singing star, Bob is the guiding force behind the song and dance team of Wallace and Davis. He wears his fame easily and is a born leader, but has some trouble with social and romantic interactions. Despite his occasional gruffness, he is a deeply kind and principled man who is searching for his true love. A superb singer with a crooning style who moves very well.
PHIL DAVIS [Late 20s to Mid 30s] [Baritenor] The fun loving, go-getting half of the famous showbiz team of Wallace and Davis. Excellent jazz and tap needed -- an outstanding song and dance performer. Very, very funny -- a “golden age of musical theatre” clown.
BETTY HAYNES [Mid/Late 20s; possibly young-ish early 30s] [chest mix sound and soprano extension] A sensible and bright young woman who has put show business before romantic relationships for the sake of her sister and their act. At first she doesn't want to like Bob Wallace, then loves him, then loathes him, and so on. Moves well.
JUDY HAYNES [Early 20s; chest mix] The younger, more ambitious, slightly scheming
Haynes sister. While wholesome and adorable, she is sexy and flirty-a winning charmer no man can resist. Strong theater jazz and tap dancing needed-amajor song and dance performer. GEN. HENRY WAVERLY [Late 50s to Mid-60s; Non-Singing] A retired US Army General, adjusting to returning to civilian life in post World War II America. Once a powerful leader, he now struggles to run an Inn in Vermont. He remains a man of great principle and dignity. Beneath his hard, curmudgeony, military exterior lies a warm, compassionate man in need of family and love.
MARTHA WATSON [Late 40s to Mid-50s; a clarion belt voice] Once a musical comedy star, now the general's housekeeper at the Inn, MARTHA has a verydry, wry, honest wisecracking sense of humor. Bighearted but completely unsentimental, she runs the GENERAL's life despite his protestations.
RALPH SHELDRAKE [Baritone] Army buddy of BOB and PHIL's, now a major television executive with the Ed Sullivan Show. Fast-talking NY professional.
EZEKIEL FOSTER/SNORING MAN/QUINTET [Mid-40s to Late 50s] The ultimate taciturn New
Englander, who takes life at a very slow pace.
MIKE NULTY/REGENCY ROOM ANNOUNCER (Off-Stage Voice-Taped)/ED SULLIVAN SHOW ANNOUNCER BOB and PHIL's stage manager.
