Breakdown

Play description: In the spring of 1954, Georgette Thomas and her young daughter arrive full of hope in the small Texas town of Harrison. Georgette has been working hard for the last six years, raising money to help her husband get out of prison. Now she plans to join him and start their family’s life anew. Things don’t work out quite as she has planned and Georgette must learn that life is full of disappointment and compromises.

Mrs. Mavis – an old woman, 65-75, who has lapsed into senility. Spirited and cantankerous.

Slim Murray – a gentle man, a widower in his mid or late 30s or early 40s who still grieves for his ex-wife and a mother who died when he was a boy. He longs for companionship.

Judge Robadeaux – 50s or 60s, a respectable community leader.

Georgette Thomas – a single mother, mid-late 20s, who lost her husband to prison after six months of married life and has had to raise their daughter by herself. Her biggest dream is to reunite the family. She is soft spoken but determined.

Margaret Rose – the daughter, six or eight, who has never seen her father and can’t wait to meet the wonderful man her mother has described to her.

Sitter Mavis – Mrs. Mavis’ grown spinster daughter, 40s or 50s, who lives at home and cares for her parents. She is a dutiful daughter who longs for companionship and a life of her own.

Clara Breedlove – Slim Murray’s sister, early 50s, who raised him when her mother died. She is a kind and caring woman. A mother-earth type who loves her brother and friends.

Mrs. Tillman – 50s, her hobby is reclaiming “lost souls,” particularly drinkers; her latest project is Henry Thomas. She is religious, judgmental, but sincere.

Henry Thomas – late 20s, the husband of Georgette, immature, romantic, irresponsible, recently released from prison. He is a hopeless alcoholic.

Sheriff – 40s-60s. A kindly small town law man.
