SEEKING

Seeking Equity actors for various roles in Round House Theatre and Folger Theatre's co-production of THE TEMPEST (William Shakespeare playwright; Aaron Posner and Teller, directors) Some roles have been cast.

Roles will be understudied. Shows will be performed at Round House Theatre in Bethesda, Maryland.

PREPARATION

Please prepare a brief Shakespeare or other classical monologue. A brief song to be sung a cappella or played on a personal instrument may also be prepared. An accompanist will not be provided. Please bring a headshot and resume, stapled together.

BREAKDOWN

Actors must be able to move well. Athleticism, background in movement and dance preferred.

Prospero (60-69): Male, any ethnicity. Rough, brilliant, fierce, scarred and frightening, with something golden hidden inside him. A man with a voice of terrifying power that has stood on the sand and summoned spirits from a roaring sea. He the physical charisma and command of a born showman, a magician who knows, keeps, and uses dark secrets. Any experience with stage magic is helpful

Caliban 1 (18-64): Any gender, any ethnicity. Caliban will be played as conjoined twins embodied by two Pilobolus-style dancers who will both move the role and speak the text. Seeking exceptional dancer/movers who can express their inner-life with their bodies, as well as handle complex text. Athleticism, strength, and strong movement background required. Role has been PRECAST

Caliban 2 (18-64): Any gender, any ethnicity. Caliban will be played as conjoined twins embodied by two Pilobolus-style dancers who will both move the role and speak the text. Seeking exceptional dancer/movers who can express their inner-life with their bodies, as well as handle complex text. Athleticism, strength, and strong movement background required.

Miranda (18-29): Female, any ethnicity. A wild child raised with an acute sense of wonder and an intense curiosity about the world and all it contains. Disarmingly charming, funny without knowing it.

Ferdinand (18-29): Male, any ethnicity. The young prince of Naples and Alonso’s son. Funny without awareness or effort. Possibly quirky and awkward and something of a misfit.

Alonzo (45-65): Male, any ethnicity. Ferdinand’s father. A king that lives in the world of hard reality. A pragmatist in private whose whole emotional life revolves around his love for his son. Not always a good man, but always a passionate dad.

Antonia (45-60). Female, any ethnicity. Prospero’s traitorous younger sister. Brilliant, funny, engaging and completely without conscience. A person you would trust, even as she cuts your throat.

Sebastian (40-55): All genders, any ethnicity. The younger sibling of Alonso who lives (not happily, but perhaps resignedly) in Alonso’s shadow. Easily led and unconsciously funny. As the king's sibling, they are used to the role of complaining and criticizing without having to do anything about the problem.

Gonzolo (60-80): Male, any ethnicity. A lovable and funny mature individual with a great heart, a good mind. Prone to make others laugh and feel good. This is a person of deep feeling and conscience. He must also have some practicality and moral flexibility, as he has continued to serve those that overthrew and put to sea his old master. Role has been PRECAST

Stephano (30-50): Male, any ethnicity. A drunken butler. Must be very, very funny first and foremost, but also be good at comic improvisation. Agile, strong, and flexible mover, able to sing and handle complex Shakespearean text. The dominant half of a classical comic duo (e.g. Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello, etc.); actor also plays The Master.

Trinculo (20-50): Male, any ethnicity. A drunken jester. Must be very, very funny, good at improvisation, an agile, strong and flexible mover, able to sing (and hopefully play some small, easily carried instrument as well), and handle complex Shakespearean text. The straight man or put-upon half of the classical comic duo, small stature (even very small) could be a plus; actor also plays Boatswain.

Juno (20-39): Female, any ethnicity. A muse. Part of the onstage music ensemble. Must sing.
