BREAKDOWN

Project Description
The Tatischeff Café is a play told in complete pantomime with music, and narrative spoken in French gibberish while English subtitles are projected onto a screen at the foot of the stage. The play is a tribute to the great French filmmaker and mime, Jacques Tati. It is a comic adventure told in the style and magic of the great French artist. Set in 1982 and narrated through the eyes of a teen-age boy, the café harbors a host of eccentric characters who all frequent the shop and who all have an extreme admiration for the fictional Monsieur Hulot (Tati’s famous character) as they gather to annually celebrate Mons. Hulot’s fictitious birthday by dressing in his likeness and having a party. Through it all, the Ghost of Tati as Monsieur Hulot graces the premises with pansophic magic, curiosity, and humor as the community of French villagers prepare to celebrate him alongside their dreams, sorrows, joys, misunderstandings, loneliness, friendships, tragedies, and chaos of everyday life at the café. The action is swift, poignant, all in physical communication and ‘style’ mime technique, and character-centric.

Character Breakdown/Descriptions.
The 3 AEA contracts available for this production have been CAST. Actors may be considered for possible replacements, should any become necessary.

GHOST OF JACQUES TATI as Monsieur Hulot – Role CAST. Auditioning actors will be considered as possible replacements, should any become necessary. Male, Caucasian, 50’s-60’s; tall; he is dressed identically like Tati’s film character, Hulot, with trenchcoat, hat, umbrella, and smoking pipe; physically he is presented as a reflection of the film character in all aspects of movement and behavior. In the play, he is a spirit that manipulates the action and relationships in the story. A magician of sorts.

MADAME SCHUSS – Role CAST. Auditioning actors will be considered as possible replacements, should any become necessary. Female, any ethnicity; 50’-60’s. A bag-lady/street vagabond. Immigrant from Eastern Europe: Fallen royalty whose grace has seen much better days; has an anchored dignity but has nothing; always looking for ‘opportunity’ to pull herself out of her misery; a thief/pickpocket; quiet but boldly aggressive when opportunity knocks…and in this play it does.

MONSIEUR LEFLEUR – Role CAST. Auditioning actors will be considered as possible replacements, should any become necessary. Male, any ethnicity, 50’s-60’s; a lonely-heart; a Regular at the Tatischeff Cafe?. An elitist and somewhat of a snob but underneath he is simply intimidated by social interaction; meticulous, stylish, superbly coiffed; dresses in a full suit in stylish combinations of his favorite color: purple. Wears a Fedora. He is infatuated with Marilyn Monroe.

The following roles are intended to be cast with Non-AEA

MANON – Role CAST. Mid to late 20s. Female, any ethnicity. Waitress of the Tatischeff Cafe?; 8 months pregnant; poorly but cleanly dressed; long hair either bunned on the top or in a French braid; wears roller skates.

RENE – Role CAST. 20s. Male, any ethnicity. Lover/Husband to Manon; 20’s; a Tinker and Street Hustler who used to be in the circus; Ruggedly dressed; kind, love’s Manon, just not a responsible person.

JULES – teenager, Male, any ethnicity. Narrator. Son to Manon and Rene.

CLAUDE – Role CAST. 50s. Male, any ethnicity. Owner of the Tatischeff Cafe?; slightly heavy and balding; never in a hurry; jovial; was an extra in Jour de Fete—“Do you remember the cafe? scene!?”; would rather chat than work; wears unstylish clothes—button down shirt with sleeves rolled, basic polyester pants, sandals with socks.

EMILE – Role CAST. 40s. Male, any ethnicity. A Postman; rides a bicycle to deliver mail (like Tati in Jour de Fete); has a shoulder pouch for mail; tall, lanky; in Postman’s uniform; also has a bell on his bike; dreams of being rich; friendly/easy going.

PIP - 20s. Female, any ethnicity. A Sign Maker/Painter; stout and strong; is used to lifting things and a craftsman; shuffles feet, never in a hurry but deliberate; always soiled from head to foot---paint, oils, grunge, etc. Wears a floppy, heavily sweated used hat. Always has a project in progress.

ROBBER/CUSTOMER - 20s. Male, any ethnicity. A rather clean looking young man—sport coat, jeans, leather shoes, sunglasses. He is a thief by trade not by desperation. He moves smoothly with confidence, almost snake-like. Always looking for opportunity to steal someone’s fortune. Quiet.

FRENCH GENDARME - 20s. Male, any ethnicity. New to the force. Proud with a confidant strut. Proud of his uniform and likes to display his authority as a friendly protector in the neighborhood, not as a bully. He carries a revolver. Enjoys the peace that seems to prevail around the café. When trouble starts though, his pride gets bruised.

TOURIST - 20s, any ethnicity. Not gender specific. Back-packer. Has been traveling through Europe. Dressed in shorts, a loose top/shirt; hiking boots very worn; a hat; sunglasses; a good deal of ‘Bling’ made from materials not metals—wrist bands, necklaces, etc; a Hippie-type blend of accessories. Easy going; ‘life is fun’.
