Breakdown

The Snow Queen
30s-40s. The Snow Queen is one of the four spirits who once controlled equal parts of the world. She symbolizes all the beauty and the destruction that winter brings. She is beautiful but looks are deceiving. She is fierce, manipulative, vengeful, and lonely. An indomitable adversary, she can effortlessly cast her spell to control others. Her cold heart despises the warmth and her revenge against the world has consumed her. Banished to far away part of the mountains she has been overcome with hatred and it drives her to hurt the people who look up at her domain. However, this hatred is also her weakness and is ultimately her downfall. She speaks with an Appalachian dialect.

The Story Weaver
(also plays Old Story Weaver of Lonesome Gap)
40s-60s. The Story Weaver leads the journey of Gertie, the young heroine, through its twists and turns guiding her and the audience from adventure to adventure. She is mystical, enigmatic, magical, powerful, and passionate. Filled with southern charm and a warm spirit, she encourages Gertie to follow her heart. While she genuinely cares for the characters in the play, she is there to challenge them and to help them discover who they are. There is something ancient in her soul that makes you feel she has always roamed these mountains and understands them better than anyone. She speaks with an Appalachian dialect.

Old Man Mason
(also plays Wild Dream Demon 2, Robber Man, and Ensemble)
50s-60s. Old Man Mason is a local shopkeeper with a heart for storytelling. He is warm, wise, kind and comforting. To Gertie and Cade, he is a good friend and confidant. Overcome with a passion for the past, he has an imagination that cannot be contained. He is superstitious and believes there is a nugget of truth in every story. Mason is afraid of the snow and the dangers it can bring. Underneath all of his warmth and guidance are scars from the disappearance of his brother at a young age. He speaks with an Appalachian dialect.

Water Witch
(also plays Wild Dream Demon 1, Robber Woman, and Ensemble)
50s-60s. The Water Witch is a tricky spirit hiding in the elements of nature. With the ability to change from water to wind, she is smooth, sneaky, selfish, and ethereal. She knows what she wants and will do anything to get it. She is powerful and little stands in her way. She can fool others with coyness but what lurks underneath can be lethal. A masterful manipulator, she does not give up until forced to. She speaks with an Appalachian dialect.

The Crow
(also plays Great Wind, Mountain Cat, and Ensemble)
30s-40s. Meeting Gertie on her journey, the Crow agrees to guide her through part of her journey. He is fearful, knowledgeable, capable, clever, and faithful. He feels a strong sense of camaraderie to Gertie and is a loyal friend to her. However, he is shadowed in fear of the unknown and does not like surprises. He is inspired by the bravery of others but too scared to have his own. His dreams are bigger than his wings can take him. He longs for the freedom of open skies and a family to call his own. He speaks with an Appalachian dialect.
