SEEKING
This adaptation stays true to the classic book about orphaned Mary Lennox who is taken away from her home in Colonial India to live with her reclusive uncle in the Yorkshire Moors. In keeping with the location and period of the story, all actors will need to speak in dialect.
Script has elements of story theatre, where cast members play narrators in addition to their main roles. AEA Actors of all ethnicities are encouraged to audition.
PREPARATION
Please prepare a 1 minute monologue, and be ready with a contrasting piece in case we’d like to see more. If you have a British accent, and even better, a Yorkshire accent, we’d love to hear it!

February 12, 2017. All performances are matinees (weekday mornings for school groups, weekends for families). Local hires preferred. Modest travel stipend is available for cast members who live between 50-65 miles from the theatre. All performances are at the 550 seat Lewis Family Playhouse.

BREAKDOWN
MARY LENNOX [Female] Adult, to play 10 years old. Mary starts as a willful, headstrong child who is secretly starve for affection, as no one has ever really loved her or bothered to spend time with her. A sour, disagreeable child, a truth-teller who hides passion under a veneer of not caring. Finding a garden to tend and people she likes and who like her, opens her heart, and then she is young, eager, and in love with life. She blossoms during the course of the story and changes not only her life, but that of everyone around her.
MRS. MEDLOCK [Female] 50+ - THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST
MARTHA SOWERBY [Female], to play 20 years old. The youngest housemaid at Misslewaithe Manor. Martha comes from a large family of urchins who are materially poor, but rich in love and affection. She’s a warm, earthy young woman, who tells it like it is, and is full of good cheer. If Misslewaithe was run like a normal house, Martha would be too rustic to be allowed upstairs, but she’s a hard worker and compassionate pragmatist. She really becomes Mary’s first friend.
DICKON SOWERBY [Male] Adult, to play 12 – 16 years old. Martha’s brother. Dickon is a homely, snub-nosed Yorkshire lad who is in some ways magic; he’s an animal charmer, he understands all of nature and growing things, he’s good natured, trustworthy, and can be relied upon to keep important secrets and see the good in all living things. Quirky, warm, rustically charming.
ARCHIBALD CRAVEN/DOCTOR CRAVEN [Male] 40’s – 50’s. We are casting one person to play BOTH the reclusive owner of Misslewaithe Manor, and his cousin, a Doctor. ARCHIBALD is dour, taciturn and sad ever since his beloved wife died 10 years ago, and wanders the earth seeking solace. He can’t bear to see his son because he’s a terrible reminder of the woman he lost, but he is genuinely lonely and unknowingly seeking for family. DR. CRAVEN is a persnickety, slightly uptight man whose expectations for future wealth are connected to whether or not his ward survives, which is an internal and ongoing conflict of interest. He is often baffled by Colin’s condition, and naturally irritated at the high-handed young lord of the manner, which makes him tired and cranky.
COLIN CRAVEN [Male] Adult, to play 10 year old boy. Mary’s cousin, the bedridden son of Archibald Craven. Having been sickly since he was born, he's heard people whispering that he won’t live to grow up. He knows that everyone has to do whatever he says for fear of sending him into a rage, so he starts the play as entitled and high-handed as Mary, and he behaves like a young rajah, lordly and imperious. But secretly he too is lonely, afraid of death, a child starved for affection and connection. He is eventually healed by Mary and Dickon’s friendship, and as the garden grows it completes his cure.
BEN WEATHERSTAFF [Male] 60 – 70 years old. Crabbed, crotchety Gardener of Misslewaithe Manor. Like most dour, taciturn people, he’s prickly when approached, but he has a soft heart, and loves both the Robin and his dead mistress tenderly, which is why he’s kept up her garden for ten years, even when it meant climbing over a wall to do it. He, like all the lonely people in Misslewaithe, has a yearning open heart, and he grudgingly comes to love Mary.
THE ROBIN - Casting a puppeteer (non-speaking role). The robin is an important character in the story, befriending Mary and helping her to find the key to the secret garden. He is impertinent, saucy, bright, inquisitive, and a flirt with the humans he loves.
