Breakdown

Based on the children’s classic story by Frances Hodgson Burnett, THE SECRET GARDEN enchants and charms with a Tony-Award winning score. An orphaned girl transforms a neglected garden into a paradise and opens the hearts of all around her.

NOTE: The production features musician/actors and requires that several actors play violin, viola or woodwinds – Celtic style.

Seeking: (3 Women, 1 Man). Note: All contract indications listed below may be subject to change.

Woman 1:
Will play Mary Lennox. Seeking young actor 18+ who can believably play/look 15 yrs old (range: Ab3-D5). A headstrong, smart and curious young girl – lots of emotional range The role of Mary Lennox is central to the story. It is Mary Lennox who finds her own heart and enables Archie and Colin to open theirs and regain faith in living again. (Song to sing at audition: “The Girl I Mean to Be”). [This Track is intended to be cast under an AEA Principal Contract]

Woman 2:

To play Martha/Dreamer Chorus/as cast:
20s-early 30s (Range: Mezzo-Soprano Belt, G3-D5). Sassy, imaginative, smart, compassionate. Whatever life brings her, she’ll be able to handle it. Actor must play violin, viola, accordion, woodwind or horn. Yorkshire accent. (Song to sing at audition: “Hold On” or “A Fine White Horse”). Woman 3:

To play Rose/Mrs. Winthrop/as cast:
Late 20s-mid 30s (soprano, legit). Beautiful, self-possessed, self-centered as well. Rose lacks the maternal instincts of her sister, Lily and would rather be the belle of the ball. Upper class British accent. (song to sing at audition: “A Girl in the Valley” or “How Could I Ever Know”) [This Track is intended to be cast under an AEA Chorus Contract]

Man 1:

To play Ben Weatherstaff/Major Holmes/as cast:
40s-60s (Range: E3-D#4). Working class gardener. Knows more than he says. Charming, but can be a little bit of a curmudgeon, but always with a wink. Actor doesn’t have to play an instrument, but we would welcome violin, viola, woodwind, horn or Irish drum. Yorkshire accent. (song to sing at audition: “It’s a Maze” or “Winter’s on the Wing” – which is a Dickon song, but ok for Ben auditionees to sing) [This Track is intended to be cast under an AEA Chorus Contract]
