BREAKDOWN

Synopsis:

1934-1947. Great Britain. When a group of miners and a dentist hire a professor to teach Art Appreciation, they embark on one of the most unusual experiments in art history. As the pitmen become painters, suddenly avant-garde artists become their friends, their work hangs in prestigious collections, and they are celebrated in high society. But every day, they still risk their lives down in the mine. Based on a true story, this heartfelt lesson about character over class and talent over privilege challenges the way we look at art and its makers and reveals our universal desire for a richer, more colorful existence.

All characters are British, mostly based on real people, and age through the piece. NOTE: The roles described as Geordie will require Geordie accents. We will work with dialect in rehearsals, but actors are encouraged to attempt the Geordie sound at auditions. (Tutorial videos will be sent with sides.)

GEORGE BROWN: M, late 40’s-60’s. Miner. Geordie. The oldest. Leader of the group. Labor representative. Officious. By the book. Loves rules and quotes them at length. Left school at 11.

OLIVER KILBOURN: M, mid 30-40’s. Miner. Geordie. Open and thoughtful, brainy at times. Dedicated and loyal miner. Skilled. Loyal to fellow miners. Breadwinner from age 11 when he left school. becomes the most famous and accomplished of the miner/artists. Self-aware. Experiences romantic tension with Helen Southerland.

JIMMY FLOYD: M, 40-60’s. Miner. Geordie. Timid at times, curious, easily surprised. His reactions often plays as comic relief because of his unpretentious naiveté about art. Left school at 11.

HARRY WILSON: M, 45-60. Geordie. Would have been a miner but unable to work as miner since being gassed in WWI. Now a dental technician. Socialist. Quotes Marx in an almost knee-jerk way.

ROBERT LYON: M, 40-55. British painter and art professor, upper class. Sympathetic. Enthusiastic. Grows more passionate about art education across play. Ultimately shows himself as careerist, self-involved & elitist.

SUSAN PARKS: F, 20’s. An earnest young art student and life model, later in her 30’s. Matter of fact. Not overly modest. (very brief partial-nudity)

HELEN SUTHERLAND: F, 40-50. Heiress. Wealthy, cultured, and influential patron of the arts, Upper class, beautiful, well-meaning. Experiences romantic tension with Oliver Kilbourn. THIS ROLE IS CAST.

YOUNG LAD: M, 20’s. Geordie. Youthful, eager to find regular work in the mines. Unemployed, and has never had a job. Gets gentle ribbing by miners. Also plays BEN NICHOLSON: M, 30-40. A famous young artist. Helped found arts colony at St. Ives. At times feels a bit trapped and disillusioned. THIS TRACK IS CAST.
