BREAKDOWN

We are interested in country, soul, rock, folk voices and not looking for specifically legit singing. This is a show set in Tulsa, OK and the vocabulary is one of the sound and style of the classic country/folk/rock music of the 50's and 60's.

Ponyboy Curtis (15, Male, open ethnicity) Our main character, the youngest Greaser and youngest brother of three, a dreamer. Bari-Tenor, sings to G or A.

Johnny Cade (16, but looks younger, Male, open ethnicity) Ponyboy’s best friend, the smallest and least physically gifted of the Greasers. Carries a switchblade, hails from a violent home. Tenor, sings preferably to A.

Sherry “Cherry” Valance (18+ to play 17, Female, Open Ethnicity) The prettiest girl in town, Bob’s girlfriend, displays tremendous empathy for the Greasers and Ponyboy in particular. Like Ponyboy, she is a dreamer. Mezzo/soprano.

Dallas “Dally” Winston (19, Male, open ethnicity) Wily, the outlier of the Greasers, originally from New York’s Hell’s Kitchen, a lone wolf. Baritone/Bari-Tenor.

Darrell Curtis (19, Male, open ethnicity) The oldest Curtis brother and leader of the Greasers. He works a job (roofing) and has taken on the difficult task of raising and providing for his two younger brothers following their parents’ tragic death. He chose to forego a possible football scholarship to college in order to keep his family together. Bari-Tenor to G#

Sodapop Curtis (17. Male, open ethnicity) The middle Curtis brother, exceptionally handsome, a high-school drop-out, works at the local gas station. Any vocal type, at least to F#.

Two-Bit Matthews (18, Male, open ethnicity) A clown with an infectious laugh, extremely loyal to the Greasers and to the Curtis family. Any vocal type.

Bob (18, Male, open ethnicity) The leader of the Soc’s, clean-cut, aggressive, cocky, a bully. Any vocal type, baritone a plus.

Randy (18, Male, open ethnicity) Bob’s second in command. Preppy, clean-cut, conflicted. Tenor to G or A.

Paul (17, Male, open ethnicity) Another one of Bob’s friends and a higher up in the Soc chain-of-command. Former top dog. Any vocal type.

Marcia- (17, Female, open ethnicity) Cherry’s best friend. Sharp-witted, starts to take an interest in two-bit. Mezzo, down to G below middle C.

Sheila- (20s/30s, Female. Non-Caucasian) Social worker assigned to the Curtis family. Alto/Mezzo.

Ensemble (20-60 years old, open gender, open ethnicity): All vocal types, real people with Americana/Rock sound. Some featured Ensemble roles include:

Police Officer #1- Local police officer, mid-thirties.

Police Officer #2- Local police officer, mid-thirties.
