BREAKDOWN

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane is based on the beautiful novel by Kate DiCamillo. Edward Tulane is an expensive toy rabbit made of china. He is loved by a little girl named Abilene, but Edward doesn’t care. He is vain and self-centered. He has no interest in anyone other than himself. On an ocean voyage, Edward is accidently thrown overboard and sinks to the bottom of the sea. So begins his journey—a journey over which he has no control, for he is a toy rabbit. He can neither move nor speak. As years pass by, Edward meets many different people in many different situations: an older grieving couple who find comfort in Edward’s presence, a hobo and his dog who introduce Edward to a whole community of homeless wanderers, a farmer in need of a scarecrow, a sad little boy and his very ill sister, and finally a doll mender and an old doll who teach Edward an invaluable lesson. Through this miraculous journey, Edward learns what it is to love, what it is to lose that love, and how to find the courage to love again.

We’re gearing the show for ages 6 and up, and as with all MainStreet shows, it never talks down to the audience – the opposite – we believe that children are inherently imaginative and smart

THE TRAVELER (Female, 40’s+: All Ethnicities) A Storyteller, who portrays, among others: Pellegrina (Abilene’s Grandmother, wise, maybe knows more than we think), Lolly (Nellie’s grown-up daughter, a city girl), Old Lady (who turns Edward into a scarecrow). A Plus if she can really sing.

THE MUSICIAN (Male, any age). Plays guitar and is the voice of Edward’s thoughts and emotions.

THE WOMAN. (Female, 20s – 30’s: All Ethnicities) Characters include: Abilene (10-11 years old; precocious, entitled, and innocent), Nellie (50s; New England Fisherman’s wife, and lonely) Lucy the Dog, Sarah Ruth (5-7 years old, very ill). A plus if actor is able to play an instrument, but not absolutely necessary.

THE MAN (Male 30’s-40’s: All Ethnicities). Characters include: Abilene’s Father (rich, Bostonian), Lawrence (New England Fisherman, kind), Bull (a hobo, easy-going), Bryce (young boy, brother of Sarah Ruth, who needs to be more grown up than he should). A plus if he can play harmonica.
