Breakdown

People familiar with Roald Dahl’s imaginative, whimsical and fantastical classics (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, etc.) will love this adventure about a girl with special powers. When Lucy senses injustice, she gets angry and when she gets angry her Magic Finger heats up and then, well, ANYTHING can happen. When Lucy gets upset with her best friend William and his family for shooting ducks for sport, she points her Magic Finger at them and turns them all into bird-size people while the ducks become the size of humans. Lucy’s indignation turns the world into a place where the powerless are in charge and the powerful are taught a very big lesson.

All actors cast in the show (except Lucy) will also be manipulating puppets. This show had its world premiere in 2013, and author David Wood has changed it significantly for this West Coast premiere. Since the script is not published, a familiarity with the novel will be helpful in understanding the tone of the piece.

The MainStreet Theatre Company is the resident Equity TYA company at the 536 seat Lewis Family Playhouse, owned and operated by the City of Rancho Cucamonga. We do not provide housing - actors who live over 50 miles from the theatre receive a modest travel stipend. Rehearsals will be held 6 days a week, on a 7/8 schedule. Breakdown:

LUCY: (Adult, to play age 8 ish): Lucy is both the narrator and an actor in the story. She wants to do the right thing, and she doesn’t take her magic power lightly. Indeed, she finds it frightening. Even though her anger often comes from a real sense of indignation, the consequences of her actions are bewildering and worrying.

MRS. GREGG: (30’s – 40’s): Mrs. Gregg is a farmer’s wife, and William’s mother. She is by all accounts a good mother who wants to do what’s best for her family. (Also plays the voice of LUCY'S MOTHER and will puppeteer the “Mrs Gregg Bird” puppet)

MR. GREGG (30’s – 40’s): Mr. Gregg likes the way things are, and sees no need to change. But he proves resourceful at building a nest, and when he’s convinced to not shoot the ducks, he embraces his new idea with gusto. (Also will puppeteer the “Mr. Greg Bird” puppet)

MRS. DUCK: (30’s – 40’s): The ducks don’t speak, but convey their meaning with quacks. They are not played for laughs – in fact, it serves the story better if they are played with menacing seriousness. In this fable-like, magic tale, the ducks display more dignity and intelligence than the humans. The Ducks will be puppets until magic turns them human size. (Also plays LUCY'S TEACHER, a mean woman who gets turned into a cat, and will puppeteer Mrs. Duck and other bird puppets)

WILLIAM GREGG (Adult, to Play age 8-ish) – William is impressed with Lucy’s powers, but also just wants to be her friend. He thinks flying like a bird is a huge adventure, but when he realizes there is real danger, he helps to convince his parents to apologize to the ducks. (Also will puppeteer the “William Bird” puppet)

MR. DUCK (30s – 50’s) ): The ducks don’t speak, but convey their meaning with quacks. They are not played for laughs – in fact, it serves the story better if they are played with menacing seriousness. In this fable-like, magic tale, the ducks display more dignity and intelligence than the humans. The Ducks will be puppets until magic turns them human size. (Also plays a Dog owner who is mean to his dog, and will puppeteer various bird puppets)

MASTER DUCK (Male, any age): The Duck Family’s son. The ducks don’t speak, but convey their meaning with quacks. They are not played for laughs – in fact, it serves the story better if they are played with menacing seriousness. In this fable-like, magic tale, the ducks display more dignity and intelligence than the humans. The Ducks will be puppets until magic turns them human size. (Also plays a Dog, and will puppeteer various bird puppets.)
