THE HOUSE THAT WILL NOT STAND

Sensuous, witty, heartbreaking, and uplifting, award-winning Gardley unearths a story about free women of color in New Orleans 1836, where black Creole women entered into common-law marriages with rich white men. But the house that Beatrice built — on a foundation of wealth, freedom, and secrets — threatens to collapse after her man mysteriously dies and her three unwed daughters realize that his money could cost them the people they love. A humorous and gripping family drama told in a rich and lyrical river of words.

Setting: Faubourg Tremé, New Orleans, Louisiana

Time: One Sunday (24 hours) in the summer of 1836.

SEEKING:

Beartrice Albans: Female, 50, Black - A free woman of color. Mistress of Lazare Albans; a white, wealthy merchant. Queen of her household. She is a strict but fiercely loving mother, with a commanding presence and underlying Southern grace. A strong believer in good appearances, manners and tradition.

Agnès Albans: Female, 29, Black - The oldest of Beartrice’s three daughters. Agnès is sensual and full of desire with a frank sense of humor. She longs for adventure outside of her mother’s home and is willing to take risks to find love. She desperately wants to be the first sister to succeed.

Maude Lynn Albans: Female, 24, Black - The middle of Beartrice’s three daughters and has the lightest skin. Maude Lynn has a strong moral compass and is devoted to her spirituality. She fears trouble and is unwilling to scheme as her sisters do. She is ultimately able to stand up for what she believes.

Odette Albans: Female, 20, Black - The youngest of Beartrice’s three daughters and has the darkest skin. She is romantic and unaware of the dangers of the world. Odette trusts what her sisters tell her but deep down is full of undiscovered confidence.

Makeda: Female, 40, Black - A slave who works in Beartrice’s house. Makeda is wise, observant, and resourceful with a regal energy. She acts as a second mother and protector of the three daughters. She hopes to buy her freedom from Beartrice.

La Veuve: Female, 45, Black - A free woman of color. Beartrice’s sworn enemy. La Veuve is an opportunistic town gossip who is constantly stirring the pot.

Marie Josephine: Female, 48, Black - Beartrice’s sister. Marie Josephine is clairvoyant and connected to the dead. She wistfully dreams of a lover from a past life and is determined to help free the daughters from Beartrice’s tight grip.
