Breakdown

A comedy written in 405 B. C. by Aristophenes. Freely adapted by Burt Shevelove. Even more freely adapted by Nathan Lane. Music & Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Original direction and choreography by Susan Stroman.

DIONYSOS: (male 30-60, range F3-F5)

The leader of the club. He is the leader of this sojourn down under. He is distinctly witty, clever and funny but not without some gravitas and empathy for the world and its inhabitants. Dionysos loves humanity. He is the god of theatre and vino.

XANTHIAS: (female 20-50, range TBD)

Originally written as a male role, Xanthias is female in our production. She’s funny, witty and smart. But not too smart.

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE: (male 60-76, range F3-D5)

Yes, he is THAT Shakespeare. Must be comfortable with the language of the bard himself.

GEORGE BERNARD SHAW: (male 50-70, speaking role)

Doesn’t sing but MUST have an ability with language and ideas. No one specific physical type but we are looking for someone to speak the words of this fellow. Again, no singing.

PLUTO: (male 35-65, range A3-F5)

He is pretentious, flamboyant, and a salesman of sorts. A funny fellow in a deadpan sort of way.

HERAKLES: (male 30-45, range G3-F5)

Should be in good shape, very masculine and a legend in his own mind. The half-brother of

Dionysos. He is genial but beastly in strength, stature and reputation.

CHARON: (male 50-70, range C4-F5)

He plays two roles including the boatman to Hades. He has some history and has seen it all.

ARIADNE: (female 25-40, range G3-D5)

She was Dionysos’ wife, who died young and tragically. She was mortal and totally in love with her husband.

ENSEMBLE (men and women)

This is a show that absolutely utilizes the chorus extensively. You will be singing and dancing and playing many roles. The music for the company is quite wonderful; it is Sondheim after all.
