Breakdown
The story of Anne Frank's short life is a tragic but poignant one. She was born in Germany on June 12, 1929. Her parents Otto and Edith, came from respected German families. Otto had served as an officer in the German army during WWI, a rank reserved for the upper class. In 1933, when Anne was just 4 years old, Hitler's party came to power. Fearing for their future in Germany, Anne's parents decided to move north to the Netherlands where they believed they would be safe. During their confinement, Anne discovers herself as a beautiful, thoughtful, and extraordinary girl. Her story is a constant reminder to us all of the power of the human spirit. Please note: some of the characters are teenagers, we will read older actors who look appropriate. Anne Frank: young actress to play 13, vibrant, full of life, wisdom beyond her years. She is the narrator of the show. Must be comfortable with mature subject matter. Otto Frank: 40's. He’s the ultimate peacemaker, hardworking man, respected by the community and his family. Edith Frank: 40's. Struggling to keep things together during this time of strife. Emotional. Margot Frank: actress to play 16, oldest daughter of the Frank family. She’s kind, warmhearted, emotional. Dancing ability a plus. Peter Van Daan: actor to play 16, a young man coming of age during this time of strife. Mrs. Van Daan: 40's, a woman holding onto her past. Passionate. Gregarious. Mr. Van Daan: 40's, an insecure, unhappy man who takes his emotions out on his family. Mr. Dussel: late 40’s-early 50’s, a man lost in this time of strife. Trying to fit in and make the best out of the situation. Miep Gies: 20's, secretary to Mr. Frank. Relays the news and stories (both good and bad) from the outside world. Mr. Kraler: An employee of Mr. Frank who helps hide the Families. First, Second, Third Man: 20's to 30's, Nazi soldiers and officers; forceful and intimidating. Ability to speak or familiarity with German a plus.
