THE BIRTHDAY PARTY

MEG: British. A working-class woman in her 60’s, who owns a boarding house with her husband, Petey. Meg is sweet, dotty, and deeply and inexplicably attached to her boarder, Stanley. She appears to be oblivious to the underlying menace of the situation unfolding in her home. Her manner of speech is lower-class, uneducated, maternal.

PETEY: British. A working-class man in his 60’s who owns a boarding house with his wife, Meg. Petey is a deck chair attendant at a nearby beach. He is a gentle man. When pushed, though, he will try to stand up for what be believes. Lower-class, a man of few words.

STANLEY: British. An emotionally troubled man in his 30’s. Paranoid, dark, and very clever. Stanley’s disposition suddenly turns sullen at the news of new boarders in the boarding house where he resides. He claims to be an accomplished pianist who is trying to get back on his feet, but his reliability is unclear. It may or may not be his birthday. Highly intelligent, well-read and educated, but not ‘posh’ or aristocratic in his manner of speech.

LULU: British. Working class neighbor, in her 20’s or early 30’s. Pretty, common and extremely vulnerable.

GOLDBERG: British. An attractive, charismatic and charming leader, in his 40’s/50’s. His past is vague, but he clearly has a dark history, and his presence brings a sense of menace. He is a brilliant manipulator, with a sinister and charming side.

MCCANN: Irish. Goldberg’s henchman, in his 40’s/50’s. He’s a bit of a thug, and an imposing figure who serves as the muscle of the operation. Good at what he does, but oddly nervous about it in anticipation.

NOISES OFF

LLOYD DALLAS: The director of Nothing On, the play that the characters in Noises Off are attempting to perform. Lloyd is passionate, suave, hot-tempered, and extremely harried. His show is about to open and it is not going well... Carrying on with both Brooke and Poppy, which adds to his stress.

DOTTY OTLEY: This role has been cast.

GARRY LEJEUNE: An actor in his 30's or early 40's. Means well. Believes in The Theatre. Tries to keep the show going and everyone’s morale up, but often has trouble finishing his sentences. Extremely flustered. His good nature is replaced with jealously when he believes Dotty has begun carrying on with Frederick.

BROOK ASHTON: Young and sexy, but a terrible actress. Incapable of taking direction. Spacey and tuned-out – whether onstage or off. Blind as a bat without her contacts, which have a tendency to pop out at bad times. Carrying on with Lloyd, which is how she got her part in the show.

POPPY NORTON-TAYLOR: The assistant stage manager of Nothing On. In her 20's. Overworked and often on the verge of tears. Works frantically to keep the show from completely falling apart, a hopeless (and thankless) task. Carrying on with Lloyd. There’s something she hasn’t told Lloyd yet...

FREDERICK FELLOWES: A neurotic actor. Age indeterminate – seems to be in his late 30's or 40's. Bumbling and filled with self doubt. A sweet man. Not the brightest bulb in the box. Always has a thousand questions about his lines and blocking. Violence and blood upset him, causing him to faint or get nosebleeds.

BELINDA BLAIR: An experienced actress. Appears to be in her 40's. Always positive and reliable. Charming. A goodhearted busybody, who knows all the gossip about the company. Attempts to keep the show going when it begins to unravel.

TIM ALLGOOD: The company stage manager. Young – early 20's. Long-suffering. Exhausted and completely sleep-deprived. Responsible for an inhuman amount of tasks and forced to understudy everybody.

SELSDON MOWBRAY: Cheerful. Elderly—appears to be 60's/70's. Alcoholic. The entire cast attempts to keep him from getting his hands on a bottle. Forgets lines. Misses entrances. Causes the company to panic when he cannot be found at all.
