The Antelope Party, by Eric John Meyer

Produced by Oklahoma City Repertory Theater
Directed by Jesse Jou
Synopsis: A group of diehard adult superfans of My Little Pony, searching for community in an
economically depressed Rust Belt city, is thrown into turmoil when the local Neighborhood Watch rebrands itself as The Antelope Party, a new political force that brings out the worst in everyone. As lines are drawn and loyalties are tested, can the magic of friendship withstand the growing tide of tyranny? A dark political comedy.

Content warnings: toxic relationship dynamics, including gaslighting; mature themes; cult indoctrination and conspiracy thinking; kidnapping; bullying of marginalized groups.

Seeking:

Ben, late 20s-early 30s, Black, male-identifying. The founder of the Rust Belt Bronies Meet-up Group. Warm and friendly, but very shy, Ben seeks to create an inclusive space that transforms the sadness and exclusion of his everyday life. He makes uncomfortable compromises to survive. Ben cosplays as Fluttershy.

Shawn, mid to late 20s, White, male-identifying. Shawn is a loyal, trusting friend who struggles with social awkwardness, insecurity, and resentment. He is susceptible to radicalization. He has a crush on Maggie. Shawn cosplays as Pinkie Pie.

Rachel, late 20s to early 30s, White, female-identifying. A Pegasister, Rachel is compassionate, well intentioned, and slightly performative in her politics. She sometimes makes up stories to feel important. She still lives at home with family. She really wants to do what’s right, but sometimes doesn’t know what that is. Rachel cosplays as Twilight Sparkle.

Doug, late 20s to early 30s, any race, male-identifying. Doug quickly becomes the “outsider” of the group, after he witnesses Maggie’s indoctrination into The Antelope Party. He finds it harder and harder to participate. He has the potential to lead, but he is otherwise an average, observant, and principled human trying to act ethically in the face of his growing worries about the world around him. Doug cosplays as Rainbow Dash.

Maggie, mid to late 20’s, Black, female-identifying. Maggie shares the social difficulties of the others, but she is also charismatic, politically astute, and loyal to her influential family. She has a will to power. She introduces everyone to The Antelope Party, but soon finds herself questioning her own participation. Maggie cosplays as Rarity.

Jean, mid to late 30’s, any race, female-identifying. A lonely woman, prone to paranoia, who stumbles onto the group. She is a 9/11 Truther and desperately wants friends.
