SEEKING

Seeking 14+ Equity Actors and/or Swing/Understudies for 2023-23 Season for three live productions: multi racial and gender imaginative casting. Most actors will play multiple roles (see breakdown).

Ten Thousand Things believes that artists are our biggest asset and are committed to providing livable wages. MInnesota/Twin Cities actors encouraged to attend.

PRODUCTIONS:
Summer/Fall: Iphigenia at Aulis, by Euripides (author of translation TBD), directed by Marceal Lorca
Winter: Mlima’s Tale, by Lynn Nottage, director TBD
Spring: Little Shop of Horrors, book and lyrics by Howard Ashman, music by Alan Menken, directed by Marcela Lorca


PREPARATION

REQUIRED: classic or heightened language monologue, 2 minute maximum; ADDITIONAL IF DESIRED/ABLE: up to 16 bars of a song of your choice, a cappella. *There will not be an accompanist on site. We wish to hear singing acapella to reflect the minimal instrumentation that is used under performance conditions.* Please bring a headshot and resume with you to auditions.

OTHER

Have proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test within 72 hours. All personnel greeting you and in the audition room are fully vaccinated & will remain masked throughout the audition process. Everyone will remain masked at all times unless actively auditioning.

If you would prefer to send a taped audition you are welcome to do so - auditions@tenthousandthings.org. If sending in a tape please keep total audition submission to 4 minutes or less and include a copy of your headshot and resume

An Equity Monitor will not be provided. The producer will run all aspects of audition.

BREAKDOWN

Everyone entering the audition venue (i.e., venue employees, Equity members, nonmembers, casting personnel, creatives, producers, musicians, COVID Safety Managers, etc.) will be required to undergo a symptom check and provide one of the following prior to entry into the venue:

Proof of full vaccination. “Fully vaccinated,” as defined by the CDC, is more than 14 calendar days following receipt of a final dose of an FDA or World Health Organization authorized or approved vaccine.

Proof of a negative PCR test result taken no earlier than 48 hours prior to entry into the audition venue.
(OR)
Proof of two negative antigen test results (e.g., the first taken the night before and the second taken no less than 2 hours) prior to entry into the venue.

- Two-ply cloth face masks, surgical masks, singer’s masks and respirators (N95, KN95 or KF94) will be allowed for face coverings. Single-ply face masks, gaiters and bandanas are not acceptable face coverings. Everyone in the holding room and audition room will always wear a face covering as described above. Actors may remove their mask when in the audition room when they are actively auditioning. The time spent unmasked should be as minimal as possible. Face coverings must be worn correctly (covering the nose and mouth).
- Surgical masks and N95s will be available on site if you do not have one.

If the risk level for Hennepin County is trending upwards and may rise to High (Red) we will contact members with appointments at least 24 hours before the first audition appointment time to let them know there is a chance that the auditions may need to be postponed or canceled. All members with appointments will be notified if the auditions must be postponed or canceled.

We encourage members to prepare for their audition at home, to the extent that they can (e.g., get dressed, hair/make-up, etc.) to avoid crowding in bathrooms and dressing rooms.

- There will be a maximum of 3 people in the audition space at a time: Artistic Director, Production Manager, and the auditioner.
- Up to 20 people may be in the holding space at a time.
- Elevators Maximum occupancy is 2 people.

*This will be a heavily sung, choral based, play. Singers strongly encouraged to audition. Intention toward non-traditional and gender imaginative casting will be used. Most actors will play multiple parts.

Iphigenia: 18+, daughter to Agememnon & Clytemnestra, betrothed to Achilles,

Agamemnon: 30s+, the leader of the Greek coalition, husband to Clytemnestra, father to Iphegenia,

Clytemnestra: 30s+, Agamemnon's wife, Iphigenia's mother

Menelaus: 30s+ Agamemnon's brother

Achilles: 20s+Greek war hero, betrothed to Iphigenia

Chorus of 6: various ages, genders and backgrounds; singers, doubling in roles of Messenger 1 and 2, Old Servant etc.

Mlima's Tale by Lynne Nottage

Mlima: An African bull elephant, Old, clever, a wanderer, and a warrior. Black/African/African American, male identifying, any age

Player 1: up to 10 various role as culturally appropriate: Black/African/African American identifying, any gender identity or age,

Player 2: up to 10 various role as culturally appropriate: AAPI identifying, any gender identity or age,

Player 3: up to 10 various role as culturally appropriate: Any cultural identify with specific interest in Black, Indigenous, AAPI, or People of Color, any gender identity or age,

Roles covered by Player’s 1, 2, 3:
Rahman: A Somali poacher. Nervous and green.
Geedi: A Somali poacher. Experienced and proud, honorable in his own eyes.
Githinji: Chief of Police. Sees everything, and how it can most benefit him.
Wamwara: Regional Warden. Takes his responsibilities to heart.
Andrew Graves: Director of Wildlife. Wants to do the right thing, without having to try too hard.
Guoxi Fu: A Chinese diplomat. A collector. Happy to benefit from his position.
Hassan Abdulla: A Tanzanian trader. Skittish, but with an eye on the greatest profit.
Aziz Muhammed: A merchant. Comfortable and cautious.
Captain Ramaaker: An American ship captain. By-the-books, except under pressure.
Jim Baxter: Chief Mate. An opportunist.
Hua Huynh: A Vietnamese customs officer. Watchful and disinterested.
Thuy Fan: A Vietnamese trader. Easygoing. Enjoys winning.
Master Yee: A master ivory carver. An artist. Doesn’t ask questions.
Alice Ying: A Chinese woman. Nouveau riche. Eager to have the best and show it off.
Mr. Cheung: An ivory salesman. Has a flair for the big sale.
Hong Feng: A businessman. A little self-righteous.
Li Jun: A businessman. A gossip

Orin/ Ensemble: a sadistic dentist, abusive boyfriend of Audrey, male identifying 30s+

Chiffon/ Ensemble: lives on skid row, part of trio of singers

Crystal/ Ensemble: lives on skid row, part of trio of singers

Ronnette/ Ensemble: lives on skid row, part of trio of singers
