Breakdown
NOTE FROM CREATIVES: Everyone must have a great facility for Shakespearean text in a way that is natural, powerful and accessible. Seeking very strong actors. Musical ability is a strong plus as there will be some singing and playing throughout. Virtually all of the roles, even the most serious, benefit from a comic sensibility.

NOTE from A.R.T.: The American Repertory Theatre is a LORT theatre committed to an inclusive casting policy of non-traditional casting and encourages all actors to audition regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity, or the presence of a disability.

Seeking Equity actors:

PROSPERO
Male: 60s. Rough, brilliant, fierce. Scarred and frightening, with something golden hidden in him. Voice of terrifying power: He has stood on the sand and summoned spirits from a roaring sea. He has the physical charisma and command of a born showman. A magician who knows, keeps, and uses dark secrets. Any experience with stage magic is helpful.

ARIEL
Male: Early 20s or looking younger. Trained and skilled sleight of hand artist. Strong voice. Physically strange or striking could be helpful. Rowdy, unearthly, waifish, naughty, even cruel. A spirit is fun to know, but not a nice person. (Note: Especially seeking actors who are able to illustrate Shakespearean text using sleight-of-hand to produce/disappear various items to illustrate or elaborate on the story. Should be as creative and innovative as one's imaginations and skills allow.)

CALIBAN
Male. A monster. Conjoined twins embodied by two (2) Pilobolus-style dancers who will both move the role and speak the text. We need exceptional dancer/movers who can express their inner-life with their bodies as well as handle complex text.

MIRANDA
Female. Looks like a teenager. A wild child raise by an obsessive, mad, brilliant father on a desert island. Odd. Immediate. Uninhibited. An acute sense of wonder and an intense curiosity about the world and all it contains. Does not need to be typically beautiful, but should be instantly attractive and engaging in a way that touches the heart. Funny without knowing it.

FERDINAND
Male: Late teens or 20's. The young prince of Naples. Alonso’s son. Funny and sexy without awareness or effort. Perhaps burdened with stupendous good looks. Or perhaps quirky and awkward and something of a misfit. Funny and smart are extremely helpful. Horny enough to fall instantly in love with a wild girl on a desert island an hour after his father has died...

ALSONSO
Male: 45-65. Ferdinand’s father. A king. In the world of hard reality, he’s a pragmatist. In private, his whole emotional life revolves around his love for his son. Not always a good man, but always a passionate dad.

ANTONIO
Male: 45-60. Our villain. A sociopath. Prospero’s traitorous younger brother. Brilliant, funny, engaging and completely without conscience. A person you would trust, even as he cuts your throat. Should feel and look younger than Prospero, and should resemble him.

SEBASTIAN
Male: 40-55. Younger brother of Alonso. He lives-- not happily, but perhaps resignedly-- in Alonso’s shadow. Easily led. Unconsciously funny. As the King's brother he is used to the role of complaining and criticizing without having to do anything about the problem.

GONZOLA/GONZOLO
Male or female: 60+. A lovable and funny mature man or woman. Must be able to get real, genuine, honest laughs. S/he has a great heart, a very good mind (even if it strolls about on its own a bit) and is a person of deep feeling and conscience. S/he must also have some practicality and moral flexibility, as she has continued to serve those that overthrew and put to see her old master.

STEPHANO
Male: 30-50. A drunken butler. First and foremost, must be very, very funny. Must also be good at comic improvisation, an agile, strong and flexible mover, able to sing, and handle complex Shakespearean text. Is the dominant half of a classical comic duo (e.g. Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello, etc.).

TRINCULO
Male: 20-50. A drunken jester. Must be very, very funny, good at improvisation, an agile, strong and flexible mover, able to sing (and hopefully play some small, easily carried instrument as well), and handle complex Shakespearean text. He is the straight man or put-upon half of the classical comic duo. Small stature (even very small) could be a plus.

BOATSWAIN
A rough and capable seafaring man of middle years. Played by the actor who plays TRINCULO.

THE MASTER
A rough, practical, no-nonsense seafaring Captain of middle years. Played by the actor who plays STEPHANO.

MARINERS, APPARITIONS
Miscellaneous roles, played by the various characters as detailed above.
