BREAKDOWN

Now in it's thirteenth year, Throughline Artists produces Summer Shorts in an annual festival of 6 new one-act plays, written and directed by some of the most preeminent artists in the American Theater. The plays are presented in groups of three, as a part of either Series A or Series B, which perform in repertory. Each series receives 25 performances.

[JOE]
Appamatox. Caucasian, Irish Descent, Early-Mid 30s - Joe works to maintain a respectable, well-balanced life. He's enthusiastic and supportive by default and possesses an inherent desire to do the right thing. Joe believes people deserve the benefit of the doubt and is a fun guy who cherishes time on weekends to toss the football around with his buddy Frank. He keeps a nice lawn and garden; we imagine he's always a good husband. While Joe abhors racial injustice and believes he'd jump aboard any effort to repair a wrong, he reluctantly comes to question his own limits.

[ALEX]
The Bridge Play. Any ethnicity, 18-24. This high school senior, An outspoken millennial, interrupts a stranger trying to commit suicide. Funny, offbeat, and a little naïve. His sweetness and positivity are totally charming even if he is a little clueless.

[OLD MAN]
Interior. Any Ethnicity, 55-65. An intelligent, thoughtful man who has lived a full life. He has a hard exterior from a lifetime of manual labor, but there is a softness in him projected through his kind eyes. Generally a strong, stand-up sort, but witnessing a tragic event has caused him to falter in his courage.

[STRANGER]
Interior. Any Ethnicity, 22-33. A young man in his twenties, quick, inquisitive, intelligent. He's highly respectful of the Old Man's judgment and inclined to follow his advice. However, in these pressured circumstances another side to him occasionally shows itself, a little quick-tempered or impatient even tending towards exasperation. He's an unknown quantity in the village, and is from somewhere quite different and far away. Caught up in these circumstances by chance, he's just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

[PHIL]
Lucky. 25 - 30, Caucasian, American. After of WWII, Phil finally returns home to a small Missouri town after working construction jobs down south. Holed up in a hotel on the outskirts of town, he is deeply isolated by symptoms of PTSD. After having no contact for six years, Phil struggles to reconnect with his family and loved ones, while finding his place in an ever changing fast paced world.

[MEREDITH]
Lucky. 25 - 30, Caucasian, American. With the sudden return of her husband Phil after six unexplained years, Meredith searches for answers and clarity on where things stand. Ultimately, hoping that their love will allow them to both move forward and forget their traumatic past. A strong person who has been pushed to the edge, working odd jobs and enduring years of small-town whispers. Her survival instincts are sharpened by the realities of a post World War II society.

[MARIS]
Here I Lie. 22-27, Caucasian. Thin, small frame, Believably sickly. She comes from privilege, whip-smart, and self-aware. Straight from Vassar to the world of publishing, she is eloquent and knows it. She’s the least sentimental person she knows and she knows so very many people.

[JOSEPH]
Here I Lie. 33-40, Any Ethnicity. He’s a genuinely good person, gentle, kind, thoughtful. He’s pretty ordinary, by his own estimation, not someone people notice. He's never the top of the class, nor the bottom of the barrel, nothing about him stands out. He’s forgettable, except that he’s not completely willing to be.
