The maximum capacity in the audition room is: 30

Time: 1935

Place: The Garden District of New Orleans – specifically the mansion of Mrs. Violet Venable and the
prehistoric garden cultivated by her recently deceased son, Sebastian.

SEEKING:

Mrs. Violet Venable: Female. Age range: 57 – 65. Regal, well spoken, hard as nails, richer than
Midas; her health is somewhat debilitated from a small stroke that she works hard to cover-up. Small
in stature, but large in personality and strong of conviction. Hard as nails but can be charming when it
suits her, richer than Midas etc. A tyrant. She wishes to have her niece, Catharine, lobotomized. Any
Ethnicity.

Catharine Holly: Female. Age range: 25 – 32. Attractive. Street smart. She witnessed Sebastian’s
horrible death and has now been confined to St. Mary’s psychiatric hospital. Disturbed and haunted by
Sebastian’s death. She can be aggressive and wild because she feels trapped, like an animal in a
cage. She writes her journal in the 3rd person. Any Ethnicity.

Mrs. Holly: Female. Age range: 45 – 60. Catharine’s mother (and sister to Mrs. Venable’s deceased
husband). Williams writes: Mrs. Holly “is a fatuous Southern lady who requires no other description.”
Overly talkative, affected, nervous; she always seems a little breathless. A bit vulgar – and not very
bright. Any Ethnicity.

Sister Felicity: Female. Age Range: 30 – 50. A nun in the nursing order – possibly the Sisters of St.
Joseph. Assigned to St. Mary’s Hospital, she accompanies Catharine as guard and keeper. She is
formidable, strong, and tough. She is a strict observer of the rules. Any Ethnicity.

Miss Foxhill: Female. Age Range: 30 – 50. Mrs. Venable’s personal secretary. A timid, frightened
woman who is cowed by - yet worships - Violet. Efficient, mousey, spinsterish. Serving Violet Venable
is her life’s devotion. Any Ethnicity.

Dr. Cukrowicz: THIS ROLE IS CAST. Male. Age range: 40 – 45. A doctor of psychiatry at Lion’s View
Hospital – where he is making advances in surgical lobotomies. Attractive, well dressed, genuine,
naturally charming, intellectual, always a professional. He is a truth-seeker and asks many questions,
though he mostly keeps his own counsel. Any Ethnicity.

George Holly: Male. Age Range: 23 – 30. Catharine’s younger brother. Good-looking and well built; slim; athletic. Working class but has higher aspirations. Greedy, aggressive, self-centered. Has a bit of
the sadist about him. Any Ethnicity.
