Breakdown

All characters (with the exception of the Adult Male and Adult Female role) are Boys and Girls, all approximately 17 years old. All sing extensively and are involved in several group numbers. All must be able to participate in physically demanding choreography. All actors must be comfortable with explicit material regarding sexuality and sex.

Melchior Gabor:
A smart, liberal, intellectual who is unashamed of his sexuality. He is a romantic and a humanist. He idolizes love and the value of love-making until he discovers a darker side of himself. Actor must be comfortable with a love-making scene that includes exposing buttocks, intimate physical contact with female actor.

Moritz Stiefel:
A genuine, warm, smart but not intellectual, sheltered young man who is overwhelmed by the distractions of adolescence and the demands of school. Marches to the beat of a different drummer. Becomes increasing defeated and depressed over the course of the play.

Ernst Robel:
Somewhat effeminate and awkward. Actor must be comfortable with prolonged stage kiss with another male actor. (Note, same actor plays Reinhold, a hard-edged boy in a reformatory. Actor must be comfortable simulating a group masturbation scene.)

Hanschen Rillow:
Smart and confident. Makes the system work for him. Actor must be comfortable with simulating a solo masturbation scene as well as a prolonged stage kiss with another male actor. (Same actor plays Rupert, a hard-edged boy in a reformatory. Actor must be comfortable simulating a group masturbation scene.)

Georg Zirschwitz:
Tends to melt down. In love with his piano teacher. (Same actor plays Dieter, a hard-edged boy in a reformatory. Actor must be comfortable simulating a group masturbation scene.)

Otto Lammamier: Anxious, nervous. (Same actor plays Ulbrecht, a hard-edged boy in a reformatory. Actor must be comfortable simulating a group masturbation scene.)

Wendla Bergman:
A girl who longs to know about the world of love and procreation. Desperate to empathize with her friend, Martha, who has suffered abuse at the hands of her father. She falls in love with Melchior and makes love to him without knowing she could get pregnant. Actor must be comfortable with a love-making scene that includes intimate contact with the actor playing Melchior. Actor must also be comfortable with stage choreography/combat that depicts her being beaten with a stick.

Martha Bessel:
Likes Moritz. Her father beats her and has sexually abused her.

Ilse Neumann:
A girl who has been thrown out of her own home and has managed to survive amongst bohemians. Has seen more of the tough side of life than any of her childhood friends. She is a survivor who longs for the innocence of her own childhood.

Thea:

Anna:
One of Wendla's friends.
