BREAKDOWN
ENSIGN NELLIE FORBUSH
Caucasian, 20-25. A young, patriotic, spunky Navy nurse who comes from Little Rock, AK and finds herself meeting challenges to her perceptions and values as she navigates the shifting waters of love and romance. She is kind, likable and popular – an optimistic and somewhat naïve girl who makes her way into the hearts of those around her with a tomboyish and unsophisticated charm. Moves well. Mezzo-Soprano.
EMILE DE BECQUE
Caucasian, 40-45. A noble and dignified, yet idealistic French plantation owner, with incredibly strong convictions. He has fled his own country after a violent protest led to murder. A widower who has settled into a comfortable and peaceful life in the South Pacific with his two children. Because he regrets the darkness in his past, he tries to steer clear of romantic and political entanglements but finds that as the US Navy takes up residence on his island, he may have to reengage in both love and war. After he is charmed by the energetic Nellie Forbush, he is reminded of times when he would risk life and limb for love, for a cause. Baritone
BLOODY MARY
Asian/Pacific Islander, 40-45. An entrepreneurial islander who swindles American soldiers out of their money with great charm. She is known for her loud, boisterous laughter. She has angst against the rich planters who have come to the Islands for their exploitation of the Native population and therefore seeks revenge by bleeding them out of their money. She is strong and enticing and uses this knowledge and the naiveté of the White men, to create a better life for her and her daughter. Mezzo-Soprano
STEWPOT
Caucasian, 20-30. Also a Seabee, Carpenter’s Mate Second Class, Stewpot is one of Billis’ right hand men, he’s talkative and jolly – a bit of jokester. He’s harmless and good natured but a little bit of a dope. Baritone
LUTHER BILLIS
Caucasian, 20-30. A scheming Seabee who always has a plan to earn a dime or get ahead. He’s well known by everyone on the Island and has become a leader of sorts. He always has his ear to the ground. He is crafty and self-serving, but everybody’s chum – a genuinely likable guy. While he plays a bit of a tough guy with the other men on the Island but he is a big softy when it comes to Nellie. Baritone
LT. JOSEPH CABLE
Caucasian. 20-25. A patriotic young soldier who has reached these Islands after having been in active battle elsewhere. He is good looking, brave and has a striking and serious presence. A wealthy young man from Jersey, he’s college educated, smart and curious. He becomes enchanted by the island and its people but has to learn that in order to have what he wants, he will have to leave his learned prejudices behind and really engage in love. Tenor
CAPT. GEORGE BRACKETT
Caucasian, 40-50. A captain in the U.S. Navy – the big boss on the Island, who the men affectionately call “Iron Belly”. He is formidable and intimidating and eager for action on this island which seems to not be of great importance in the war. He is wise enough to seek the council of his right hand man – Harbison, and listens to his measured opinions. While he is a little pompous, he cares for his men and has a bit of a fun streak – and they care for him in return and follow his commands.
CMDR. WILLIAM HARBISON
Caucasian, 30-45. Brackett’s executive officer who offers advice to his superior. He is sober minded and factual, a true realist. He’s a “good man in a storm” – someone you can rely on to tell the truth and offer a fair perspective. He knows and sees everything happening around him – perhaps more than anyone knows or that he lets on.
