BREAKDOWN

The musical is set in New York and Southern Turkey from 1913 to 1915. A New York newspaper reporter finds himself in an Armenian village at the time of the Turkish genocide of the Armenian people. Varying from joyousness to tragedy, the story is told through the letters he writes to his American girlfriend. In these, he sets forth the inspiring but tragic and true tale of the Armenians living in the shadow of Musa Ler (Moses' Mountain)

SEEKING:

JASON KARRAS
(Male, age 24-32) Born in Buffalo. He moved to New York City where he has become a rising journalist and is sent to be a foreign correspondent, traveling through newsworthy areas in advance of and during the beginning of World War I. He is aloof but observant and enthusiastic about his career. Tenor.

NICHOLAS KARRAS
(Male, age 25-35) - Jason Karras's older brother. He comes to New York to attend an award ceremony in his brother’s honor. He has a fatherly relationship with his younger brother. A strong character actor who can dance and sing. Tenor.

CHARLES CHAPIN / THE EFFENDI
(Male, age 45 – 65) CHAPIN: Jason Karras's New York editor. He is strong and gruff. He needs things done when he says they should be done. THE EFFENDI is a Turkish military head of a town in Anatolia in Southwest Turkey. He is authoritative and can exudes evil. strong character actor. Baritone.

CAROLE
(Female, age 21 – 27) She lives in New York City and is in love with Jason. She does not want Jason to leave to cover the Armenian genocide. She serves as the narrator of this piece and jumps back and forth in time. As a woman in her 20’s, she is young, beautiful, and naïve. When telling the story in the present, 1948, after WW2, she is a mature woman in her 50’s. Actress for this role should be versatile, and a good singer who can also dance. Alto / Low Soprano.

ANGELIQUE der KALOUSTIAN
(Female, age 27 – 40) She and her husband have returned to his ancestral home in Anatolia after his father passed away. She is Parisian and makes clear her desire to return to France as soon as possible. Everything about her is French and she feels above the local population. In the second act she changes to become much more sympathetic as she begins to personally feel all that is going on around her. Must be an exceptional singer and actor. Able to do a strong French accent. Alto / Low Soprano.

ANOUSH
(Female, age 25-35) She ran an orphanage in Anatolia that was shut down by the Turkish military. She escaped from them and seeks refuge with Zoravar der Kaloustian. She is grief-stricken by what she has been through and seen. Must be an extremely strong singer and actor. Soprano.

DIKRAN
(Male, age 30 – 40) He ran an orphanage in Anatolia with his wife, Anoush. They escaped together and he seeks the help of Zoravar der Kaloustian. He is grief-stricken by what he has been through and seen but worried about his responsibility to his wife and the orphans. Baritone.

DANIEL der KALOUSTIAN
(Male, age 21 to 25) He is Zoravar's young brother. He is often naive in a sometimes comical way. Tenor.

REVEREND NOKHUDIAN
(Male, age 45 – 60) A strong and caring religious leader. He disagrees with Zoravar as to what is best for his parishioners. Powerful singer. Baritone / Bass.

ENSEMBLE
2 men and 2 women. 20’s- 35. Strong singer/dancers (able to sing close harmonies).
