Breakdown
Please note: We are looking for a multi-talented ensemble of performers who sing, act, and dance with equal ability. ALL must move well or dance. Working well together as a group (especially the male quartet) is important, as is the ability to step forward and hold the stage alone. The cast breakdown below follows the basic description as was presented on Broadway with some of the songs on which they sing lead. Performers of all ethnic and racial backgrounds are encouraged to attend. The descriptions below follow the original Broadway production as it was originally cast. We are not limiting ourselves to this original breakdown as far as ethnicity and race and age are concerned. All types will be considered for almost all roles.
Actors need to create their own personality with ALL roles!
THE MEN:
The Quartet, which consists of Fred, Ken, Adrian, and Victor, must be good with harmonies, attractive and in shape, i.e. “The Drifters”,“The Coasters”, etc.
Fred - African American, 20s-40s. Father-like figure type, sultry voice, Solid and implacable. Bass. “You’re The Boss”, “Little Egypt”.
Ken - African American, 20s-40s. A smooth crooner. Baritone. “Spanish Harlem”, “Loving You”, “Poison Ivy”. Very strong ballet ability a plus, but not a must!
Adrian - African American, 20s-40s. Energetic, leader of the group, second tenor. Ready to bust out in song at any moment “Stand By Me”, “Youngblood”, “Love Potion #9”
Victor - African American, 20s-40s. Bad boy, comedic timing a must, energetic, first tenor. “Searchin’”, “Treat Me Nice”. Strong acting chops, needs to bring a torch/drama to I (I Who Have Nothing)
Michael - Caucasian, 20s-40s. Genuinely suave and impressive, a ladies man, evokes the memory of Elvis. True rock ‘n’ roll singer and strong mover/dancer. Second tenor. “Jailhouse Rock”, “Kansas City”, “Ruby Baby”.
THE WOMEN:
Deelee - Caucasian, 20s – early 40s. Innocent, but with a wild streak. The Shimmy Girl. High belt, and mix. “Falling”, “Trouble”, “I’m A Woman”. STRONG DANCE ABILITY!
Brenda - African American, 20s-40s. Savvy, sexy and smart. Sultry/Jazzy belt and mix. “Don Juan”, “Some Cats Know”, “I’m A Woman”. STRONG DANCE ABILITY! BALLET/POINTE WORK A HUGE PLUS NOT A MUST!
Pattie - Caucasian, 20s-40s. Grounded. The throaty voice of experience. More rock i.e. Janis Joplin. (Big) belt, and mix. “Pearl’s A Singer”, “I Keep Forgettin’”, “Don’t”.
BJ - African American, 20s-40s Sexy, funny and heartbreaking. Huge Gospel voice, likes to move and belt and mix. Vocal styling Big Mama Thornton or Aretha Franklin, “Fools Fall In Love”, “Hound Dog”, “Saved”.
