BREAKDOWN

OKLAHOMA

First Rehearsal Tuesday, September 03, 2019; First Public Performance Friday, September 27, 2019; Closing Date Sunday, October 13, 2019

Laurey: She has an innocence and yet an air of knowledge about her. She lives with her Aunt Eller on a ranch and is in love with Curly, though she may not admit it. Female identifying soprano, 20’s to 30’s

Curly: Has a confident swagger and deserves it, he is the most handsome man in the whole county. He is in love with Laurey but refuses to admit it - a cowboy and the romantic lead. Male identifying baritone, 20’s to 30’s

Aunt Eller: She acts as the town’s aunt, a fun-loving caretaker. She watches over the town and a ranch with her niece, Laurey and a hired hand, Jud. She sees the good in everyone. Female identifying mezzo, age 40+

Will Parker: Will is a cowboy who is skilled enough to compete in rodeos. He is interested in Ado Annie but isn’t the brightest bulb. Will is a dance role, tap dancer preferred. Ability to do rope tricks is a plus. Male identifying tenor, 20’s to 30’s

Jud Fry: Described as dark and growly by others, Jud takes care of the ranch Laurey and Aunt Eller live on. Jud does not fit in with the society he lives with, he is seen by most as an outsider and misunderstood. He has feelings for Laurey. Works hard to take care of Laurey and Aunt Eller on the ranch. Male identifying baritone, 20’s to 30’s

Ado Annie: Andrew Carnes’ daughter, she “Can’t Say No” to anyone. She wants everyone to be happy. Her heart is always in the right place, but she isn’t always the best judge of character. A comic, romantic lead, she is wooed by Ali Hakim, but deep down she feels a connection to Will Parker. Female identifying soprano, 20’s to 30’s

Ali Hakim: A traveling peddler who says he’s from Persia (present day Iran) - though we aren’t sure how much of what he says we can believe. He, like Jud, is an outsider to this community but not feared by most. He likes pretty things and women. He pursues Ado Annie and Gertie Cummings. Male identifying, 20’s to 30’s

Andrew Carnes: He is very protective of his daughter, Ado Annie. He doesn’t want Will Parker to marry her because he believes the cowboy’s life to be risky and unreliable. To prove this isn’t true he asks for Will to maintain $50 in order to have his daughter’s hand in marriage. He is a rancher and doesn’t feel very kind to cowboys in general. Male identifying tenor, age 40+

NEWSIES

First Rehearsal Tuesday, October 22, 2019; First Public Performance Friday, November 15, 2019; Closing Date Sunday, December 22, 2019; Possible Extension Sunday, December 29, 2019

Jack Kelly: The charismatic leader of the Manhattan newsies, is an orphaned dreamer and artist who yearns to get out of the crowded streets of New York and make a better life for himself out West. Fiercely protective and strongly loyal, Jack isn’t afraid to use his voice to make changes. Male identifying Tenor, adult to play teens

Katherine Plumber: An ambitious young reporter who works hard to make a name for herself as a legitimate journalist in a time when women aren’t taken seriously. Quick, funny, and resourceful, she boldly captures the voice of a new generation in her coverage of the newsies’ strike. Tap dancing a plus. Female identifying Mezzo-Soprano with a high belt, adult to play teens-early 20’s

Joseph Pulitzer: A pompous businessman through and through, owns the World and is concerned solely with the bottom line. Katherine’s no-nonsense father, he doesn’t sympathize with the strikers, but he does eventually – and grudgingly – respect Jack. Male identifying, age 35+

Medda Larkin: Inspired by vaudeville performer Aida Overton Walker, this big-voiced saloon singer and star of the Bowery offers her theater as a safe haven for the newsies. An astute entertainer with great comic delivery, she’s a good friend to Jack and stands firmly behind the newsies in their fight for justice. Female identifying, 20’s to 40’s

Davey: Les’s straight-laced bright big brother starts selling papers to help his family earn a living but becomes swept up in the fervor of the strike. A leader in his own right who is learning to use his voice to uplift others, Davey is the brains of the resistance. Male identifying tenor, adult to play teens

Crutchie: Jack’s best friend. A dedicated newsie with a bum leg that’s painful but helps sell more papers. Though he walks with a crutch, he doesn’t let it define or limit him. He relies on a goofy sense of humor and optimism. Male identifying tenor, adult to play teens

SPELLING BEE

First Rehearsal Tuesday, January 14, 2020; First Public Performance Friday, February 07, 2020; Closing Date Sunday, February 23, 2020

Chip Tolentino: An athletic, social, boy scout and champion of the Twenty-Fourth Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. He returns to defend his title, but he finds puberty hitting at an inopportune moment.

Logainne Schwartzandgrubeniere (Schwartzy): Logainne is the youngest and most politically aware speller, often making comments about current political figures. She is driven by internal and external pressure, but above all by a desire to win to make her two fathers proud. She is somewhat of a neat freak, speaks with a lisp, and will be back next year.

Leaf Coneybear/Carl Dad: The second runner-up in his district, Leaf gets into the competition on a lark and finds everything about the bee incredibly amusing. He is home-schooled and comes from a large family of former hippies. He has severe Attention Deficit Disorder and spells words correctly while in a trance. Doubles as Schwarzy’s dad Carl, who is her main trainer. He is the more intense and competitive of the two fathers.

William Barfee: A Putnam County Spelling Bee finalist last year, he was eliminated because of an allergic reaction to peanuts and his back for vindication. His famous “Magic Foot” method of spelling has boosted him to spelling glory, even though he only has one working nostril and a touchy, bullying personality. He develops a crush on Olive.

Marcy Park: The ultimate over-achiever, Marcy has never been given another option. She comes from a family where excellence is expected and so simply produced. A parochial school student, she assumes God, too, expects perfection. She sees herself as a mass of problems, but she keeps them to herself. Her many talents include piano, dance, martial arts, baton twirling and/or something unique to the actor.

Olive Ostrovksy: A young newcomer to competitive spelling. Her mother is in an ashram in India, and her father is working late, as usual, but he is trying to come sometime during the bee. Having found comfort in its words and vastness, Olive made friends with her dictionary at a very young age, helping her to make it to the competition. She starts enormously shy, and shyly blossoms.

Rona Lisa Peretti/Olive’s Mom: The number-one realtor in Putnam County, a former Putnam County Spelling Bee Champion herself, and the returning moderator. She is a sweet woman who loves children, but she can be very stern when it comes to dealing with Vice Principal Panch and his feelings for her. Her interest in the competition is unflagging and drives it forward. Doubles as Olive’s mom, who is just a fantasy version of herself at her Ashram in India.

Douglas Panch: The Vice Principal. Frustrated with his life, he finds the drive of the young spellers alien to him. After five years of absence from the Bee, Panch returns as judge. There was an “incident” at the Twentieth Annual Bee, but he claims to be “in a better place now.” He is infatuated with Rona Lisa Peretti, but she does not return his affections.

Mitch Mahoney/Dan Dad/Olive’s Dad: The Official Comfort Counselor. An ex-convict, Mitch is performing his community service with the Bee, and hands out juice boxes to losing students. He has no idea how to offer comfort but does find himself wishing he could find a way to make the kids feel better. This actor also plays Schwarzy’s other dad Dan, the more laid back and ineffectual of the two, and Olive’s dad, who is a fantasy version of himself coming to the bee from work.

Cacambo: Candide’s faithful and utterly devoted servant. A friend with a wealth of practical knowledge to share. Male identifying, age 25-45
