14 roles, all of which will be understudied:

ORCHESTRA MEMBERS

Orch Member 1: male, 40s-60s, Egyptian/SWANASA; Stern and authoritative Egyptian leader of the Police Orchestra. His severe exterior belies a gentle and shy personality.

Orch Member 2: male, 20s-30s, Egyptian/SWANASA, plays Trumpet or another instrument; Confident and polished charmer. Enthusiastic fan of jazz artist Chet Baker. Represents a different, more Western version of masculinity.

Orch Member 3: male, 20s-30s, Egyptian/SWANASA, plays Violin or another instrument: Concerned musician follows orders. Goofy but charming.

Orch Member 4: male, 20s-30s, Egyptian/SWANASA, plays Clarinet or another instrument; the band’s second in command. Quiet and reserved, yet eager to try his hand at conducting. He’s composed a yet unfinished concerto.

RESIDENTS OF THE TOWN

Resident 1: female, 20s-30s, Israeli/SWANASA; Charismatic and beautiful owner of the café who’s stuck in her own life. Fully herself, and somewhat isolated by that fact. Intrigued by the conductor and his musicians, she generously arranges for the band’s lodging for the night.

Resident 2: male, 20s-40s, Israeli/SWANASA; Disillusioned husband and father married to Resident 3. Earnest and charming but hasn’t quite grown up into his family role yet.

Resident 3: female, 20s-30s, Israeli/SWANASA. Resident 2’s headstrong and long-suffering wife who also feels stuck but hasn’t yet given up on her marriage or life.

Resident 4: male, 50s-70s, Israeli/SWANASA; Resident 3’s father and former musician who regales the visiting band members with stories of his musical passions. He’s the only one that sees this impromptu event for the magic that it is.

Resident 5: male, 20s-30s, Israeli/SWANASA; Tousled and painfully shy worker at the café who relies on Orch Member 2 to help him overcome his panic relating with girls. Fascinated by the version of masculinity he presents.

Resident 6: male, 20s-30s, Israeli/SWANASA, plays guitar or other instrument; Brash and charismatic friend of Resident 5’s who sets him up for a night on the town. Coolest guy in town, pretty content with his lack of direction in life.

Resident 7: The hottest girl in town. Knows she wants and deserves more than this small town. Resident 6’s girlfriend and extroverted date who brings Resident 8 along for a blind date with Resident 5.

Resident 8: female, 20s-30s, Israeli/SWANASA; The hottest girl in town’s best friend. Resident 5’s blind date, shy and upset at his lack of attention and affection, but unsure what to do about it.

Resident 9: male, 20s-40s, Israeli/SWANASA; Dedicated romantic waiting expectantly for his girlfriend to phone him at the town’s pay phone. The most hopeful person in the show.

Resident 10: male, 20s-40s, Israeli/SWANASA; Resident 1’s ex-lover who suddenly pops up in her life again. Drawn to her, and they connect in some inexplicable way.
