BESSIE, early to mid-twenties. Scrappy, funny, radiant personality. A petite woman with a mix of vulnerability and boldness. Must be 5’ 4” or less and petite.
GLEN, late-twenties. Ruggedly handsome, weathered beyond his years, a farmer turned adventurer. A big guy with a workman's hands, a dreamer's heart. At least 5’ 11” and in good physical condition.
ERAINE, Bessie's age. Brash, sure of herself. Attractive and willing to use her body to get ahead. Supports herself by posing nude for art classes – this scene is included in the script. Also plays LOUISE, a sales clerk in a small store on the rim of the Grand Canyon.
NAIAD, the Indian canyon spirit who is the protector of the canyon. An older woman,
mystical, strong commanding stage presence and voice.
SUTRO, a wealthy, middle-aged, somewhat beefy adventurer, based on Adolph Gilbert Sutro.
EMERY KOLB, weathered, lean, late 40’s adventurer who has run the rapids of the Grand Canyon, now runs a photography studio on the South Rim. Outspoken, straightforward no-nonsense resident of the canyon rim.
