SEEKING

Strong Singer/Actors who move well. All actors on the summer contract will be a part of the repertory company and in all three shows. Our Fall show contract is a single show, Always….Patsy Cline. See breakdown.

PREPARATION

Please prepare 2 contrasting 16-32 bar cuts of musical theatre repertoire in your key that is appropriate for our season. An accompianist will be provided. Bring comfortable clothes or dance clothes for movement if asked. No tap shoes are needed.

BREAKDOWN

SISTER ACT

Deloris Van Cartier:An aspiring performer, trying to find both fame and a place in the world. When forced to hide in the convent, she initially refuses to embrace her new lifestyle but learns to embrace it when she works with the choir. Loud-mouthed, and sassy, but ultimately caring.
Gender: Female Age: 25 to 35
Vocal range top: F#5 Vocal range bottom: E3

Mother Superior: The head of the convent, sarcastic and a bit stiff. Extremely protective about keeping her sisters away from the outside world, which puts her in direct opposition to Deloris and her musical teachings.
Gender: Female Age: 40 to 60
Vocal range top: E5 Vocal range bottom: D3

Sister Mary Robert :A postulant, abandoned as a baby and raised at the convent. Shy and soft-spoken, but singing with Deloris lets her find her voice. Her wallflower lifestyle has made her live a shell of a life. Gender: Female

Sister Mary Lazarus : A nun of the convent and the head of the choir. Rather deadpan and the least welcoming of any of the nuns, but she gets caught up in Deloris's soul music.

Monsignor O'hara : One of the heads of the convent. Constantly concerned with financial matters, though soul music surprisingly puts him in a different mood.

Curtis: A club owner, notorious gangster, and Deloris's boyfriend. Cocky and controlling, always on the verge of violence.

Eddie Souther: The desk chief at the Philadelphia police station and a high school classmate of Deloris who helps get her into hiding. Faces a lot of nerves when under pressure, causing him to sweat profusely. He still yearns for Deloris after all these years, and dreams of being her hero. Gender: Male Age: 25 to 35

SWEENEY TODD

Sweeney: 40s, English accent not necessary. His determination for revenge twists him into something violent and evil. However, in auditions and performance, his vulnerable side should be in play: it is what transforms him. Killing is an attempt to assuage his very visible pain, to heal himself.

Anthony: 20s, Standard British accent (RP). Idealistic, not yet corrupted by the world. Romantic. He believes people are mostly good at heart. He is the model English hero, who in reality is powerless to achieve the perfect world. He quickly surrenders to feelings of true love.

Pirelli: 30s, an Irish con man pretending to be Italian (so, 2 accents). A flashy showman with a big voice and dramatic gestures, he sells fake medicine and collects as much money as he can.

Judge Turpin: 50-60, Standard British accent (RP), a conservative judge without much compassion. Embodies Puritanical hypocrisy: lusts after his ward Johanna, even as he professes to keep her innocent and safe from vile young men. Licks his lips or has other disgusting mannerisms.

Beadle Bamford: 40s, Standard British accent (RP) or Cockney, jovial and boisterous assistant to the Judge, yet has a scheming nature. Will break the law to keep people in line. His corruption makes him blind to true good and evil. A respected citizen not worthy of respect.


Mrs. Lovett: 40s, Cockney accent, energetic, talkative, has a crush on Sweeney. There is a very slight edge of insanity to her and a streak of larceny--she is motivated by desire--for money, for love, for popularity. She is all bright eyes and smiles, but kills cockroaches and chops meat like a pro.

Johanna: 18, Sweeney's daughter. Standard British accent (RP). Her family seems easily pushed into madness. She is pretty, sweet, and delicate and the beginning; after her confinement in the asylum and until her rescue, she may be on the edge of insanity. A damsel in distress.

Beggar Woman: it's hard to see through her filthy rags to determine her age, but actually about 40, Cockney accent. She is more of a major character than she appears to be (there is a surprise at the end of the play). She's lewd, vulgar, and in constant physical and psychological pain.

DISASTER

Marianne: ingenue, journalist high pop belt

Jackie: aging but still sexy showgirl and now a lounge singer, pop belt to D

Sister Mary Downy: character, judgmental, gambling addiction, Pop/gospel high belt

Shirley: loveable character actress tap dances in A2, comedic. Belt to B

Levora Verona: faded disco diva, pushy sassy, high belty

Chad: ingenue, Pop Tenor. Pop to A

Scott: goofy young character guy-sweet pop tenor. Pop to A

Ted: disaster expert, dry character man, high pop baritone. Mix to B

Tony: attractive schemer, pop Baritone hit A flat

Maury: Character actor funny, loveable. Married to Shirley pop baritone to G

ALWAYS... PATSY CLINE

Patsy Cline: Strong singer with a wide range to play the historical character of Patsy Cline, the first female singer ever inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame

Louise: Houston housewife who is a big fan of Patsy Cline who becomes a genuine friend to the singer . Strong actress.
