Reverse Psychology was first produced by Charles Ludlum and his Ridiculous Theatre Company. All actors must have impeccable comedic timing and be able to easily handle farce.

Dr. Leonard Silver

(male, 35-45, open ethnicity) Leonard is married to Dr. Karen Gold and is the longtime psychiatrist for Freddie. His subdued, sarcastic demeanor burgeons on extreme condescension when angered. Leonard’s relationships are characterized by his obsessive need for control and his mastery of manipulation to maintain dominance. Any loss of power is countered with his volatile tendencies, resulting in bouts of verbal and physical abuse. He carries on an affair with Eleanor, his wife’s patient. This clandestine relationship provides an outlet for his repressed kinkiness.

Dr. Karen Gold

(female, 35-45, open ethnicity) Karen is married to Dr. Leonard Silver and is Eleanor’s psychiatrist. She is a wealthy art patron and compulsive clean freak that maintains an immaculate home. Karen values order and excellence so much that she would rather produce a perfect child using donated sperm from an Olympic athlete than procreate with her own husband. She juggles many commitments, answering phone calls to treat one patient while in a private session with another. She proves supportive in her extramarital affair with Freddie, urging him to be as perfect as possible in his artistic vision, an instinct she views as highly inspired.

Eleanor

(female, 25-35, open ethnicity) Eleanor is married to Freddie and is the patient of Dr. Karen Gold. She has a wild side that becomes manifest in her periodic nymphomania with Leonard, with whom she is having an affair. Leonard provides an escape from her unfulfilling marriage with Freddie, who only likes to have sex in bed and with the lights off. Eleanor demands the lights be left on to prevent her mind from wandering to other, more desirable men. She holds hostility towards her husband, is unsupportive of his artwork and is critical of his inability to earn a living. Their dull marriage has lost its spark, leaving her in a helpless state of relentless procrastination and shopaholic tendencies.

Freddie

(male, 25-35, open ethnicity) Freddie is married to Eleanor and works as an artist. He struggles with the disparate abstract instinct and expectation for realism that influence his work. Illusions of grandeur haunt him, convincing him he is a misunderstood visionary in the company of Rembrandt. He has been Dr. Leonard Silver’s patient for years and has an affair with Leonard’s wife, Karen. The destitute Freddie has made countless sacrifices for his artistic beliefs, leaving him weary in the relentless perusal of his singularly underappreciated vision.
