PREPARATION

One contemporary monologue under 3 minutes in length and 16 bars of a musical theatre song (NOT from Falsettos) or Two contemporary contrasting monologues under 4 minutes total.

FALSETTOS

September 10-27, 2020 (First Rehearsal August 10, 2020)

Marvin – (late 30s male) Jewish; a devoted husband and father; smart, funny, and charming; struggles to reconcile his desire for a happy traditional family with his love for Whizzer; high baritone.

Whizzer – (mid-late 30s male) extremely handsome, athletic, and confident; has a tempestuous relationship with Marvin; character can be any race/ethnicity; tenor.

Trina – *THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST (late 30s female) Jewish; wife to Marvin, Mother to Jason; charmingly neurotic in her effort to understand the conflicting feelings she has in the aftermath of her divorce; consults Mendel, her husband's psychiatrist, and eventually marries him; soprano/belt.

Mendel – *THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST (late 30s male) Jewish; Marvin's psychiatrist who marries Trina and enters into the tumultuous world of her life with her son, her ex, and her ex's lover while struggling with his own feelings; high baritone.

Jason – (10 - 13, to play 13 male) Jewish; Marvin's and Trina's son; bookish and awkward; his impending Bar Mitzvah, his parents' divorce, and the entrance of Whizzer into his life leave him confused, angry, and trying to sort it all out; tenor.

Charlotte – (late 30s female) one of the lesbians from next door; a dedicated doctor alarmed by the mysterious illness that is killing her gay male patients; tough, but extremely nurturing and very much in love with her partner, Cordelia; this role can be any race/ethnicity; alto/mezzo.

Cordelia – (mid 20s-late 30s female) the other lesbian from next door; Dr. Charlotte's partner; runs her own kosher catering business; very keen on making a nice home but also wants to be useful and valued for her contribution to the world; high belt voice.

THE MOORS

Agatha - *THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST Elder spinster sister. Spidery. Dangerous. Powerful.

Huldey - Younger spinster sister. She keeps a diary. She wants to be famous. She sings.

Emilie - The governess. A romantic with a sweet face. Plays the lute or similar instrument and sings.

Marjory - The scullery maid. Also the parlor maid. Down-trodden. Consumptive. Strategic.

The Mastiff - *THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST The dog. A sad philosopher king.

A Moor-Hen - A small chicken. Accident-prone. Practical and very present-tense.

GHOST/WRITER

ACTOR ONE: Plays Ruby/Ms. Carolina and Rebecca. Characters are African-American. Transgender actors are encouraged to audition.

ACTOR TWO: Plays both Patrick and Charles. Characters are White.

RUBY/ MS. CAROLINA:
A Black Cis woman. A Healer, an herbalist. a vigilante, A freedom fighter at war with a system that never saw her as human. They call her Ms. Carolina, but very few know just exactly where she came from or who she really is. She a legend, living on the outskirts of society and ready to enact justice when justice needs a fresh set of hands.

PATRICK/ CHARLE:
A White Cis man. An Irish immigrant’s son. A fugitive. A man who did the right thing for revenge and yet still feels the weight of guilt, a guilt some say perhaps he shouldn’t feel. He is a man seeking help

REBECCA WARREN:
A Black Trans woman. A secretly infamous ghost writer. Originally from the Ghetto, she clawed her way to the top of every, what is called, elite circle. While appearing “mousey”, her beauty shines through at every moment.

CHARLES “CHARLIE” ROSS:
A White Cis man. A famous author and playwright. Chevy Chase born and bred, he comes from a family of immense wealth and has five condos (one in Baltimore, DC, New York, L.A. and Florida). Plagued by writer’s block. A handsome but unassuming man, he is quit, charming and most certainly has a reputation for bedding lots of people and all of this is certainly true.

Seascape
Charlie (55+ male): On the verge of retirement. Feels he has earned the right to spend the rest of his life doing nothing. Can be stubborn. This role can be any race/ethnicity.

Nancy (55+ female): Charlie’s open minded wife of many years. Wants to dedicate her life to traveling the world, with or without Charlie. This role can be any race/ethnicity.

Leslie (20+ male): A lizard. Headstrong and cautiously curious about humans. This role can be any race/ethnicity.

Sarah (20+ female): A lizard. Sarah is eager, optimistic, and somewhat naive. This role can be any race/ethnicity.
