Breakdown

Preparation:

Prepare one contemporary or two contrasting contemporary monologues, or one contemporary monologue and 16-32 bars of a traditional Broadway show tune. You will have 3 minutes total for your audition. Bring sheet music in your key; an accompanist will be provided both days. No a cappella; no score will be provided. Be sure to bring a picture and resume stapled together.

ALL ROLES CAST—seeking actors for replacements only

MR. RUSSELL WALTER GRAHAM/LESTER THOMPSON/MAN: RUSSELL has been the postmaster in this small Texas town for a long time. Knows everyone. Teases everyone. LESTER is Wilma’s father, handsome, a widower and reformed gamblin’ man with an eye for the ladies. Somewhat estranged from Wilma. The MAN wants to buy Wilma’s house; the property in question; polite, firm, but willing to back off.

MISS MARTHA DAVENPORT has worked at the post office for a long time. Has had a crush on Russell for 15 years. Described as chasing him, a busy body, giggly and somewhat witty—a character.

MRS. LEIGHTON is a pretty woman with an air of warmth about her that it is hoped Wilma would notice. Involved with Lester. She has a “reputation.”

WILMA THOMPSON is a handsome girl with style and spirit about her. She is the young lady of property. Lives with her Aunt Gert (Gertrude Miller). She appears to be a teenager.

ARABELLA COOKENBOO is gentle looking, so shy about growing into womanhood that one can’t really tell yet what she is to look like or become. Appears to be a teenager.

MINNA BOYD is a strong black woman and maid to Gertrude Miller. She takes care of Wilma; speaks her mind.

GERTRUDE MILLER is Wilma’s aunt, a widow, emotional, judgmental, and proper. She has a soft spot for Wilma and has taken care of her since her mother died when she was a young child. Willing to defend her.

THE NARRATOR (EL GALLO): The narrator of the story who aids the performers in orchestrating the story; a rakishly handsome gallant who is dashing, sophisticated, charismatic, mysterious and inviting, yet possessing undertones of a darker side to his personality. Male, 30-45 yrs old. Strong baritone (range: A flat – High G) with the ability to move well/some dancing.

THE GIRL (LUISA): A button-maker's daughter who is in love with the idea of being in love. She is a naïve, yet spirited romantic idealist who weaves fanciful dreams based in her own highly romanticized vision of romance and love. Female, 16-20 years old. Soprano (B below middle C – High B with some coloratura and chest singing); with the ability to move well/some dancing.

THE BOY (MATT): Young male; a romantic and deeply in love. He is an innocent and rather naïve young man searching for love and adventure. Although bright he is foolish at times, approaching often dangerous situations with a false bravado. Male, 18-23 yrs old. Baritone/Tenor (Range: A – High G) with the ability to move well/some dancing.

THE BOY’S FATHER (HUCKLEBEE): Former Navy man and gardener; a boisterous, loving father and part of the duo & team of “The Fathers” who bicker and argue but are secretly plotting in the hopes that the children will fall in love and marry. Character actor with strong comedic timing and a vaudevillian song-and-dance man flair. Male, 40-55 yrs old. Baritone (Range: A – High F sharp); must be able to learn harmonies and have the ability to move well/some dancing.

ROLE CAST (seeking actors for replacements only) THE GIRL’S FATHER (BELLOMY): Fastidious button-maker and picky gardener, and part of the duo and team of “The Fathers” who bicker and argue but are secretly plotting in the hopes that the children will fall in love and marry. Character actor with strong comedic timing and a vaudevillian song-and-dance man flair. Male, 40-55 years old. Baritone (Range A – High F sharp); must be able to learn harmonies and have the ability to move well/some dancing.

ROLE CAST (seeking actors for replacements only) THE ACTOR (HENRY): An aging, over-the-top Thespian who specializes in reciting Shakespeare, he is a commedia clown; his world is the stage and he does not live in reality. Male, 30-60 years old. Strong character actor with strong comedic timing, the ability to recite Shakespeare; may be asked to speak with an English accent. Male, 50-70 yrs old. Some minor singing involved; ability to move well is helpful.

THE MAN WHO DIES (MORTIMER): Henry, The Actor's sidekick; a former actor who specializes in stage deaths. A commedia clown, his world is the stage and he does not live in reality. Male, 30-60 yrs old. Strong character actor who has the ability to move well (some dancing). Must be adept at physical comedy. Some minor singing involved; ability to move well is helpful, but role is mainly speaking.

THE MUTE: The “speechless presence” who watches, provides props, and acts as the “invisible” stage assistant; easily and equally able to assist in the storytelling (silently) or fade into the background unnoticed. Male or Female, 20-35 yrs old. Non-speaking pantomime role; must move well and be able to lift objects weighing 5-10 lbs.
