Preparation
Please preapare 16 - 32 bars of a musical number appropriate to the show. Selections from Ragtime are acceptable. Please bring sheet music; an accompanist will be provided. No taped music or a cappella allowed. A current headshot and résumé are required.

Coalhouse Walker Jr. (Baritone, strong dancer) – Male, to play late 20’s-30’s, African American. Star pianist and the father of Sarah’s child: proud, confident, stubborn; becomes militant and violent for his cause.

Mother (Alto) – Female, to play 30’s, Caucasian. Upper middle-class New Rochelle housewife; gentle, compassionate, optimistic. Struggles with the changes of society.

Booker T. Washington (Baritone) – Male, to play mid-40’s, African American. Civil Rights pioneer.

Emma Goldman (Alto) – Female, to play early 30’s-40’s, Eastern European/Jewish. Feminist anarchist. Strong willed and intense.

Evelyn Nesbit (Soprano, dance required) – Female, to play early 20’s, Caucasian. Sexy starlet loved by all men, and smart enough to use it to her advantage.

Father (Baritone) – Male, to play late 30’-40’s, Caucasian. Upper middle-class businessman. He is traditional to the male role of the period, cautious and resistant to change.

Grandfather (Baritone) – Male, to play late 50’-60’s, Caucasian. Little Boy’s grandfather. Outspoken.

Harry Houdini (Tenor) – Male, to play mid 20’s-30’s. Hungarian Immigrant. World famous magician.

Sarah (Soprano/Alto) – Female, to play 20’s–early 30’s, African American. The mother of Coalhouse’s child, attractive and vulnerable, but ultimately incredibly strong.

Tateh (Tenor) – Male, to play late 30-40’s, Caucasian/Eastern European/Jewish immigrant in search of the American Dream; intelligent, compassionate, creative.

Willie Conklin (Tenor) – Male, to play 30-40’s, Caucasian. New Rochelle’s fire chief. Obnoxious and cruel.

Younger Brother (Baritone) – Male, to play mid-20’s, Caucasian. Mother’s brother; an anarchist who is in love with Evelyn Nesbitt.

Admiral Peary (Baritone) – to play 40 – 50. Male. A famous explorer.

Henry Ford (Baritone) – Male, to play 30-40’s, Caucasian. Founder of the Ford motor company.

J.P. Morgan (Baritone) – Male, to play late 50’-60’s, Caucasian. Banking mogul and tycoon.

Harry K. Thaw – Male, to play mid 30’s, Caucasian.

Stanford White – Male, to play late 40’s, Caucasian.

Sarah’s Friend (Gospel singing Soprano) – Female, early 20’s-30’s, African American,

Juvenile Roles Available:

Little Boy (Tenor) – to play 7-13. Mother and Father’s son, precocious, observant and always curious.

Little Girl (Soprano) – to play 8-14.Tateh’s daughter. She is quiet and shy.

Coalhouse Walker III (no vocal range) to play 4-5. Coalhouse and Sarah’s son. Small. No vocals or dialogue required.
