Equity actors for roles in Quintessence Theatre Group 2023-24 Season (see breakdown).

Productions include: Love and War. Including Shaw's Major Barbara, Sartre's No Exit, The Fantasticks, The Little Prince, Shakespeare's Macbeth and Suzan-Lori Parks' Father Comes Home From the Wars, parts 1, 2 and 3.

PREPARATION

For Shakespeare, Shaw and Parks - please prepare two short contrasting monologues (90 seconds) from a classic play in heightened language. For The Little Prince and The Fantasticks, please prepare a short monologue AND a short vocal selection from a classic musical.

George Bernard Shaw’s Major Barbara / Sartre’s No Exit

Major Barbara

Barbara Undershaft – (30s) Robust, joyous, and energetic, Barbara is a charismatic and convincing major for the Salvation Army. The daughter of a foundling, Barbara ostensibly lacks social class and comes straight from the heart of the whole people.

Adolphus Cusins – (30s) A slight, thin haired, and sweet voiced student of Euripides. Driven by his mind and his heart, while being enthralled by the excesses and ecstasies of the Dionysian spirit.

Andrew Undershaft - (50s – 60s) The great arms industrialist of Europe. A man of formidable reserves of power, both bodily and mental, in his capacious chest and long head.

Stephen Undershaft / Bill Walker – (20s) A gravely correct young man who takes himself and his sense of morality too seriously. A mother’s boy and only son to billionaire Andrew Undershaft. / A rough and threatening laborer.

Charles Lomax / Snobby Price - (20s) A stereotypical unsophisticated young man about town. A clown, with a frivolous sense of humor. Engaged to Sarah on a lark./ A young, unemployed, and opportunistic poser,” incapable of honesty and altruism.

Sarah / Jenny Hill - (20s) Sarah is a slender, bored, and mundane society girl. / An overwrought Salvation lass who earnestly believes in her cause and her patron, Major Barbara.

Morrison / Bilton / Peter Shirley - (50s – 70s) The longtime family butler. / A foreman at Undershaft's armory. / A laborer, half hardened, half worn-out old-timer.

Lady Britomart / Rummy - (50s – 60s) The matriarch of the Undershaft family. / Already looking sixty at the age of forty-five, Rummy is an old bundle of poverty and hard-worn humanity.

No Exit

Bellboy (Teens – 20s) – A valet for the devil.

Jospeh “Cradeau” Garcin (30s – 50s) – A journalist from Rio. A self-proclaimed hero. Shot twelve times for refusing to fight in a war.

Estelle Rigault (20s – 50s) – A beautiful Parisian woman. She is always immaculately put together and loves to dance.

Inez Serrano (30s – 50s) - A cruel, intelligent, and stubborn postal worker. A lesbian.

Tom Jones & Harvey Schmidt’s The Fantasticks

Seeking:

The Narrator (el Gallo) - A rakish, handsome, sophisticated gallant and narrator of the show (30 – 50). He is warm, cordial, and inviting to the audience, but has his own darker moments. He aids the performers in orchestrating the story. Vocal range: Ab2 - G4

The Girl (Luisa) - A button-maker's young and idealistic daughter (15 – 25), she is a romantic who falls in love with Matt. She is naive, yet honest and tender. Vocal range: B3 – B5

The Boy (Matt) - An innocent, young man (18 – 25) who is searching for love and adventure. A bright guy, but naive and even foolish at times, approaching situations with a false bravado. Vocal range: A2 - G4

The Boy's Father (Hucklebee) - A former boisterous navy man (40 – 60) and meticulous gardener who fakes a fight with Bellomy in hopes of getting their children to fall in love. Vocal range: A2 - F#4

The Girl's Father (Bellomy) - A fastidious button-maker (40 – 60) and also a picky gardener who fakes a fight with Hucklebee in hopes of getting their children together. Vocal range: A2 - F#4

The Actor (Henry) - An aging (50 – 70), over-the-top Thespian who specializes in reciting Shakespeare, he is a commedia clown; his world is the stage and he knows no other reality.

The Man Who Dies (Mortimer) -Henry's goofy sidekick and another former actor who specializes in stage deaths (30 – 50). A commedia clown, their world is the stage and they do not live in reality.

The Mute - A speechless presence who watches, acts as the wall, and deals with props; the invisible stage assistant. Should be able to easily assist in the story or fade into the background unnoticed.

Cummins & Scoullar’s The Little Prince

The Aviator – a lost and world-weary man in his early 40s. Locked into adulthood hood, he is searching for the freedom and joy of his childhood. Capable of sketching / drawing illustrations. Vocal Part: Baritone

The Little Prince – An adventurous intergalactic prince, with wisdom beyond his years.

Female Ensemble (Rose/Snake/Desert Flower) The varied characters of the planets. Character with singing and dancing ability. Vocal Part: Bass Baritone.

Male Ensemble (Men on the Planets/Fox) – The varied characters of the planets. Character with singing and dancing ability. Vocal Part: Soprano.

Shakespeare’s Macbeth

Seeking:

Macbeth – (30s - 40s) A celebrated and powerful warrior, with ambition for greatness.

Lady Macbeth – (30s - 40s) Wife to Macbeth. A deeply ambitious woman who lusts for power and position.

Banquo - (30s – 40s) Macbeth’s friend and comrade in arms. A courageous soldier, celebrated for excellent in battle.

Fleance – (10 – 15) Banquo’s Son.

Macduff – (40s – 50s) The Thane of Fife, and another celebrated warrior, who assisted in leading Scotland to victory.

Lady Macduff - (40s – 50s) Wife to Macduff, and mother to their two children.

The Weird Sisters – Three witches who reside on the heath, prophecy and cast spells.

Duncan (50s – 60s) Celebrated and benevolent ruler of Scotland.

Malcolm (20s) – The articulate young son of King Duncan, proclaimed heir to the Scottish thrown.

Donalbain (15 – 20) – Younger brother to Malcolm.

Suzan-Lori Parks’ Father Comes Home From the Wars – Parts 1, 2 & 3

Opening: June 1, 2024

Closing: June 23, 2024

Seeking:

Hero (30s – 40s) is an enslaved Texan and the protagonist. Loyal to Boss-Master despite his abuse and disloyalty, Hero chooses to stay with Boss-Master even when opportunities to escape arise. By the end of the play, Hero remains loyal, but chooses his own identity.

Boss-Master (50s – 60s) also called “the Colonel,” owns slaves Hero, Homer, Penny and others. Dishonest and manipulative, Boss-Master periodically promises Hero freedom in exchange for huge requests he makes of him, but never follows through.

Homer (30s – 50s) Homer is an enslaved person. On Boss-Master’s orders, Hero cut off Homer’s foot when he tried to escape. He lives with Hero and falls in love with Hero’s wife, Penny.

Penny (20s – 40s) is Hero’s wife and remains emotionally loyal to Hero. When he returns from the war with a new wife, however, she takes agency over her own life and decides to run north.

Odd-See or Odyssey is Hero’s good-luck dog. He runs off after Hero kicks him. And returns at the end, having spent the play searching for his master, staying loyal despite the abuse.

Smith (30s – 40s) is a Union soldier wounded and captured by the Colonel. He reveals his true identity—a Black man who can “pass” as white—to Hero when he tries to convince Hero to abandon Boss-Master and join the Union army.

The Oldest Old Man (60s – 80s) lives with Hero on Boss-Master’s land. He offers advice to Hero and treats him like a son but abandons him when he hears how Hero betrayed Homer.

The Chorus (20s – 60s) is a group of four enslaved persons whose conversations give the audience information and insight.
