The Public Theater of San Antonio encourages participation by performers of all ages, races, ethnicities, abilities, and gender identities.

PREPARATION

For Musicals: please prepare a 1 minute monologue and/or a 1 minute song selection. A second song may be requested, if you wish to be considered for a musical in a different genre. Please bring your own sheet music. An accompanist will be provided. For Non Musicals and non-singing roles: please prepare a monologue not to exceed 2 minutes. For all auditioning, please bring your headshot and resume stapled together.

This version of Twelfth Night is a rousing contemporary musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic romantic comedy about mistaken identity and self-discovery.

Set in late-nineteenth century Germany, it concerns teenagers who are discovering the inner and outer tumult of Human sexuality. In the musical, alternative rock is employed as part of the folk-infused rock score. Spring Awakening is about change. Change within yourself, change within others, and change within time.

1905, New York City. Esther, a black seamstress, sews exquisite lingerie for clients who range from wealthy white patrons to prostitutes. She has saved enough to allow her to dream of one day opening a beauty salon for black women, and at thirty-five years old, longs for a husband and a future. When she begins to receive beautiful letters from a lonesome Caribbean man who is working on the Panama Canal, it looks like life may be about to take a different course.

SEEKING:

Esther: African-American, 30s, seamstress in New York City, she desires to marry and has saved for eighteen years to open a beauty shop for African-American women.

Mrs. Dickson: A widowed African-American woman, Mrs. Dickson owns the boarding house where Esther lives. 40s/50s.

Mrs. Van Buren: A wealthy, white American woman in her thirties, Mrs. Van Buren orders fancy corsets from Esther. She has also become her friend.

Mr. Marks: A Romanian Jewish fabric seller in his thirties. Those of the Jewish diaspora are encouraged to audition.

Mayme: An African-American prostitute in her thirties, Mayme, through her lingerie orders, has become good friends with Esther.

George: A Barbadian man in his thirties, George initiates a correspondence with Esther while he is working to build the Panama Canal. He eventually comes to New York City and marries Esther.

Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the classic tale The Princess and the Pea provides some side-splitting shenanigans.

Queen Aggravain - Role unavailable

Lady Larkin - female, 20s, soprano, The Queen’s Lady-in-Waiting but is put in charge of Princess Winnifred. She is madly in love with Sir Harry and desperately wants to marry him because she is pregnant with his baby.

Sir Harry - male, 20/30s, tenor, the Queen’s Champion-in-Arms - the Lancelot of Knights - the macho, slightly egotistical, brave, romantic knight who decides to leave the kingdom to search for a princess, and finds Princess Winnifred in the swamp.

Prince Dauntless - male, 20/30s baritone, A nice, not too smart, everyday type of young Prince who desperately wants to get married, but is prevented by his mother's strict tests that she gives to all potential candidates.

Princess Winnifred - Female, 20s/30s, Mezzo with a strong belt, A feisty, outspoken, independent, strong, optimistic, and free-thinking princess from the swamp lands. She isn’t too good with manners. She wants to get married, but must go through the queen's unfair test as well.

Minstrel - 20/30s tenor, Narrator of the story, as well as in the musical storyline. Becomes smitten with Lady Larken and tries to persuade her to flee to Normandy with him. Joins forces with the Jester to stop the Queen's plans.

Wizard - male, baritone 60s/80s, the egotistical, ex-performer who directly serves the Queen. He is the Queen’s Henchman and thinks of all the Princess’ tests. He prides himself in his position and basically obeys all of the Queen’s orders.

King Sextimus the Silent - male, 60s, non-verbal role, a kind, expressive, playful, and comedic character who is silent due to a curse placed upon him by a witch before the birth of Dauntless. He likes to chase girls through the corridors of the castle. Has good improv skills.

Jester - tenor, open age range, an energetic and peppy man who is the King's right-hand man and assists him with every endeavor. The Jester also plots with the Minstrel to spoil the Queen's plans.
