BREAKDOWN

PURPLE RAIN

SEEKING:

THE KID - 18-25. A person of color. A musical genius. The center of our story. Front man of his band. Charming, funny, with the soul of an artist. He is both driven and tortured by his musical gifts. He begins our story with shutting the world out in pursuit of his music but as we move along, he realizes that using his BIG feelings– grief, anger and love to name a few – helps him make the music he wants to make. Like many a great artist, The Kid has lots of ego, but luckily he’s surrounded himself with some great people who force him to look both outward and inward and make some changes. AN INCREDIBLY SKILLED MUSICIAN AND SINGER. Must be really skilled or ready and willing to pick up guitar and piano, and have an incredibly wide vocal range with lots of comfort singing in falsetto. In addition to guitar and piano, we are open and excited to performers who play additional instruments. Prince originated this role.

APOLLONIA - 18-25. A woman of color. Another hero. New waitress at The First. Dreams of being an actor-singer-dancer in New York. An impressive talent with an infectious energy. You can’t take your eyes off of her. Running away from home. Adventurous. Trusting and gets her heart stamped on a bit. Able to REALLY sing and is skilled with harmonies.

WENDY - 20s-30s. She/her. Open ethnicity. Plays guitar in the rock band. Willing to say what’s on her mind. Has confidence in herself, her talent and her beliefs. Fierce but also has a good sense of humor and uses humor wisely. Open to performers who play guitar or who are willing to learn guitar and are able to sing and are skilled with harmonies. All voice parts welcome.

LISA - 20s-30s. She/her. Open ethnicity. Plays keys in the rock band. Responsible and levelheaded. Keeps Wendy in check. Also unafraid to stand up for herself. Open to performers who play keys or who are willing to learn keys and are able to sing and are skilled with harmonies. All voice parts welcome.

DOC - 20s-30s. He/him. Open ethnicity. Plays keys in the rock band. The teddy bear of the group. Has a lot of empathy and really tries to support those around him. Radiates goodness. Open to performers who play keys or who are willing to learn keys and are able to sing and are skilled with harmonies. All voice parts welcome.

BOBBY - 20s-30s. He/him. Open ethnicity. Plays drums in the rock band. Just wants to play the good music and skip the drama. Open to performers who play drums or who are willing to learn drums and are able to sing and are skilled with harmonies. All voice parts welcome.

MARK - 20s-30s. He/him. Black. Plays bass in the rock band. Just trying to play his music and have a good time. Open to performers who play bass or who are willing to learn bass and are able to sing and are skilled with harmonies. All voice parts welcome.

BILLY - late 40s-50s. Black. He/him. Owner of the music club, The First. Old friend of the Kid’s parents. Desperate for the Kid to get his act together. Tries to foster positive relationships between the young musicians at his club. Sympathetic to their artistic journeys but ultimately must focus on money and attracting customers. Morris’s uncle. Rumors say he was a pimp before he found Jesus. Able to sing and is skilled with harmonies. All voice parts welcome though particularly interested in those who have a stronger lower register.

MORRIS - 20s-30s. Black. He/him, the rival. Billy’s nephew. Front man in his band The Time. Always outrageous, occasionally funny. Manages to always find himself an audience who will laugh. Fed up with the Kid’s attitude and determined to beat him to stardom. Creator and vision behind girl group The Six. Able to sing and is skilled with harmonies. All voice parts welcome.

JEROME - 20s-30s. He/him. Morris's flunky. Wherever you find Morris, you’ll find Jerome. He’s always there to go along with Morris’ schemes and jokes. Able to sing and is skilled with harmonies. All voice parts welcome.

JILL - 20s-30s. She/her. Open ethnicity. a waitress at The First. Becomes a member of The Six. Has dreams of making it big but only plays the saxophone. Funny. Able to sing and is skilled with harmonies. All voice parts welcome. Open to performers who play the saxophone or who are willing to learn saxophone.

BRENDA - 20s. She/her. Open ethnicity. a waitress at The First. Gets sucked in to being a member of Morris Day’s group and is certainly not treated with respect. Not the biggest talent but Brenda doesn’t know that. Funny with a lot of energy. Open to performers who play the drums or who are willing to learn the drums. A strong ALTO singer and is skilled with harmonies.

MAMA - She/her. Black. 40s. A force. Powerfully holds space though she says very little. A presence that actively haunts The Kid.

CHICK - He/him. 30s-50s. Bouncer at The First. The muscle who is always at the ready. Able to sing and is skilled with harmonies. All voice parts welcome.
