PREPARATION

Please prepare no more than TWO MINUTES TOTAL of audition material, whether that's monologue(s) and/or song(s) -an accompanist will be provided. Please time your material. To see as many people as possible, we strictly adhere to the TWO MINUTE time limit from the moment you begin your audition.

AUDREY - Trans-female. 25-35. Audrey works with Seymour at the flower shops and is the secret love of Seymour’s life. Sweet and vulnerable. However, her vulnerability should not feel weak but ultimately a strength -- there is grit and toughness to her, she's not a wilting flower, but she is eager to please. Lacking in education and self-esteem, she suffers from feelings of hopelessness at her current situation in life, including her physically abusive relationship. Audrey smiles through the pain with her huge heart and simple dreams. Great Broadway/Rock belter with strong acting/comedy skills. ALL ETHNICITIES. MUST HAVE STRONG SINGING VOICE. LEAD.

SEYMOUR - Male, 25-35, a florists’ clerk at Mushnik’s Flower Shop. He is a true outsider and misfit, with radiating charming openheartedness. He’s a struggling introvert who comes from poverty but has a hero’s heart. Genuine and earnest and in spite of his flaws, he’s a sweet and well-meaning man. Strong actor and singer. Especially seeking actors that are good with physical comedy. ALL ETHNICITIES. MUST HAVE STRONG SINGING VOICE. LEAD.

MR./MRS. MUSHNIK - Female/Male/Non-Binary/Trans, 50-65. Seymour’s boss. Owner of Mushnik’s Flower Shop, a failing business on Skid Row, Mr./Mrs. Mushnik is given to cursing in Yiddish. He/She is a person who seldom smiles and often yells. Strong character actor. ALL ETHNICITIES.

ORIN -male, late 20s-early 40s. Audrey’s dentist boyfriend, Orin Scrivello is a motorcycle-riding black leather jacket-wearing tough-guy. He is tall, dark, handsome, and sadistic. His fondness for his own nitrous oxide proves to be his undoing. MUST HAVE STRONG COMEDIC CHOPS. WILL PLAY OTHER ADDITONAL ROLES. ALL ETHNICITIES.

AUDREY II - Any gender. Any age. A wise-cracking anthropomorphic cross between a Venus flytrap and an avocado with teeth, Audrey II is Seymour’s favorite and soon-famous plant. Seymour purchased the plant at Chang’s Flower Shop during a mysterious total eclipse of the sun; but once the plant has the taste of human blood there is no stopping it. ALL ETHNICITIES. MUST HAVE STRONG SINGING VOICE.

THE URCHINS: CRYSTAL, RONNETTE, AND CHIFFON - Female/Male/Non-Binary/Trans, 20-35, African American, Latina, Asian, Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern. Crystal, Ronnette and Chiffon are Street urchins, acting as the occasional narrators. Young, hip, and smart, these girls are the only ones who have a grip on reality. Very tight harmonies. ALL ETHNICITIES. ALL MUST HAVE STRONG SINGING VOICES. LEAD.

THE GREAT LEAP

CONNIE – Female, 25, Chinese-American. Manford’s “cousin” and UC Berkley grad student. A level-headed, big-picture thinker and Chris Paul/Klay Thompson type.

SAUL – Male, 52, Jewish. Coach of the University of San Francisco’s men’s basketball team. A foul-mouthed, shot-blocking, washed-up Larry Bird type.

WEN CHANG – Male, 43, Chinese. Coach of Beijing University’s men’s basketball team. Observant and efficient. Favors three-pointers over aggressive inside shots. Tim Duncan would appreciate his energy. His English is formal, but relatively unaccented.

MANFORD – Male, plays 17, Chinese-American. Intense, scrappy, runs into trouble and attacks the rim with a ruthless crossover. Not tall. More Allen Iverson than Jeremy Lin.

ANNE - (female, 40s). Andre’s daughter. She loves her father, and she is exhausted by the increasing effort of caring for him, all while balancing an occasionally unsympathetic and impatient partner whom she loves and wants to please, and the demands of her career. Under immense pressure.

ANTOINE/PIERRE - (male, 40-50s). Anne’s partner. He loves his partner, and will put up with her challenging father for her sake, but occasionally he gives in to the desire to say what’s really on his mind, and do what he’d like to do, which is to intimidate the hell out of Andre so he can finally get him out. Sensitive, tolerant, or terrifying as the occasion demands.

LAURA - (female, mid-20s to mid-30s). A professional caretaker, she is both charming and kind, and can roll with a challenge, likes a bit of banter in her conversation. Not above gentle flirtation to play a role her charge as assigned her.

MAN - (male, 40s to 50s). Plays a number of characters who Andre experiences as threatening strangers, including Anne’s partner Pierre and a staff member at the nursing home named Olivier. Should be able to seem sensitive, loving to the woman he loves, tolerant of the man he has to put up with, or terrifying and threatening at will.

WOMAN - female, 40s to 50s. Plays a number of women who are strangers to Andre, as his daughter Anne, a caretaker, a nurse. Pragmatic and compassionate, loving and worried.

ANNIE OAKLEY – Famous Sharpshooter, strong belter with a significant range, young backwoods character with self-assurance and spunk who transforms from dirty illiterate to the star of the Buffalo Bill Show by virtue of her expert marksmanship and sunny disposition. Good comedic timing, and no inhibitions. Strong presence.

FRANK BUTLER– Leading Man. The male star of the Buffalo Bill Show. Best marksmanship in the world – until Annie comes along. Lyric baritone. Strong actor, self-assured bordering on conceited, strong command.

DOLLY TATE – Frank Butler’s Assistant in Buffalo Bill show, good alto, obnoxious personality. Wild with jealousy over Annie’s success. Must be able to play “big character” without being “over the top”.

CHARLIE DAVENPORT – Dolly Tate’s brother and chief critic, Manager of the Buffalo Bill Show. Seen it all roadie. Capable, direct, exasperated with the craziness of the tour. Strong comedic timing, sarcastic. Baritone.

WINNIE TATE– Dolly’s pretty younger sister and chorus girl in the show. Falls in love with and marries Tommy Keeler. Dancer. Light belter

TOMMY KEELER – Half Irish / Half Native American. Marries Winnie, much to Dolly’s dismay. Dancer. Light Baritone/Tenor.

BUFFALO BILL CODY – Owner and emcee for the Buffalo Bill show. Retired Old West military man. Good baritone. Good showman personality.

CHIEF SITTING BULL – Wise Native American leader. Chief who adopts Annie Oakley, baritone. Dryly hilarious. Comedic timing a plus. Non-Singing role.

FOSTER WILSON – Crusty old Hotel Manager, baritone, strong personality with dry wit. Non singing role.

PAWNEE BILL – Owner of the Far East show, primary competitor of Buffalo Bill, Baritone. Good showman skills. A somewhat oily, less respectable version of Buffalo Bill.
