Doubling TBD.

PIP: An orphaned country boy who has been brought up and bullied by his sister, and dearly loved by Joe, her husband. He is appealing and passionate, but loses his moral compass as he rises in London society. A physically demanding role; during the course of the play he moves from late teens to early 20’s, with a brief final scene in his 30’s.

JOE GARGERY: 40’s. An inarticulate backwater Blacksmith, married to Pip’s older sister. He is strong and has a huge heart. Uneducated, but wise, he is a loving father to Pip.

MAGWITCH: 40’s/60’s. Abandoned as a child, he has lived a life of crime and incarceration. Crude, terrifying and fiercely enamored of Pip, he ultimately reveals surprising warmth. He is the inciting incident that changes Pip’s life.

JAGGERS: 40s-60’s. An icy, but brilliant, London lawyer. He has seen much of the world of criminals and the results of poverty – hence his coldness and the need to wash his hands as often as possible. He is the Guardian of Pip’s “Expectation”.

WEMMICK: 50’s. Jaggers’ clerk. His dry, stiff attitude at work belies the lively, imaginative, and comfortable homebody he is at his “Castle”. He cares for his aged father and his property in a most unique manner. He befriends Pip and helps him.

HERBERT POCKET: 20’s. Pip’s best friend. He is a posh, but penniless gentleman - naïve, and overly optimistic. He introduces Pip to London, and stands by him loyally.

WOPSLE: 30’s-50’s A church clerk, and an amateur actor with aspirations to play the London stage.

DRUMMLE: 20’s - 40’s. An unbearable snob from a wealthy family who runs in the same circles as Pip and Herbert in London. He is cruel and brutish and seeks Estella’s hand. Doubles as COMPEYSON: 20’s - 40’s. A handsome, dangerous swindler who uses and abuses Magwitch.

NARRATOR: 40’s – 50’s. Mature character man, also playing many small roles.

NARRATOR: 20’s/30’s. Young character man, also playing many small roles.

UNCLE or AUNTIE: PUMBLECHOOK: 40s/50’s: Male or female. He/She is Joe’s relative, who Mrs. Joe has “appropriated”. A prosperous, self-important fool.

MISS HAVISHAM: 40’s/50’s. An eccentric, broken and vengeful heiress living in the largest, and strangest, house in Rochester. She is manipulative, mysterious, and sad. The adopted mother of Estella, she has not changed her surroundings since being jilted at the altar many years earlier.

ESTELLA: 20’s (and one brief scene in her 30’s.) Beautiful. Elegant. Intelligent. Magnetic. She has been raised to be heartless, but struggles against her upbringing. She is the object of Pip’s romantic obcession. Doubles as MOLLY: a murderess, now working as Jaggers’ housekeeper, and Estella’s mother.

MRS. JOE: 30’s/40’s. Pip’s coarse and cruel older sister, who brings him up “by hand.” Feeling she was made for a better life she takes her frustrations out on Pip and Joe. Doubles as MISS SKIFFINS, Wemmick’s prim, wry, middle aged fiancé.

BIDDY: 20’s/30’s. Generous, plain, practical country girl. Unsophisticated but smart. She loves Pip, but later loves, and marries Joe.

NARRATOR: Teens/20’s. CLARA, Herbert’s lovely fiancé. Helps to hide Magwitch. (Possibly Doubles as YOUNG ESTELLA*)

Ensemble roles:

AGED PARENT (Wemmick’s octogenarian, deaf father)
MR. TRABB (a country tailor)
RAYMOND POCKET (Pip’s Teacher)
NIMMY PICKLES (F) and SPOONEY MIKE (London petitioners)
THE SERGEANT
THE NEWGATE MANTHE GENTLEMEN at the Finches
