BREAKDOWN

All actors also play the roles of Storytellers. The Storytellers act both in and out of the story, as narrators and as players in the story itself (peasants, gossipers, general ensemble).

TI MOUNE- African-American Female, 18-22 yrs old. Soprano with a strong, high belt. A naïve,

peasant, island girl whose life is being led/helped by the Gods. Young, stubborn, full of restless energy and passion. She feels stuck in a humdrum life that her parents are happy with and she can’t wait to break free and live a more adventurous life. Must be an extremely gifted actress of much depth with a stellar voice and strong dance ability. While we are seeking someone that can dance well, we ultimately need the best actor singer and this will be created on the actress. We do need to see someone that is not afraid to dance like no-one is watching” and be uninhibited. It is more about style than technique at the end of the day.

DANIEL - African-American Male, 25-30 yrs old. Tenor. A wealthy heir from the rich side of the island. He is Ti Moune’s love interest. He comes from a very privileged family and a lot is expected of him. He loves Ti Moune but knows he has to fulfill his obligations. He is not a cruel person, but he suffers from the self-absorbed privilege of the very wealthy, and does not see how his carelessness can hurt Ti Moune. He is engaged to Andrea. He should be extremely handsome and a gifted actor with a beautiful voice.

ERZULIE – African-American Female, 25-50 yrs old. Mezzo-Soprano. Beautiful Goddess of Love. Ethereal. Loving. Daniel is her choice for Ti Moune and in the end her concern is to prove her own power against that of Papa Ge. She is the one who gets the other gods to agree to answer Ti Moune’s prayer, wanting to show the girl (and the other gods) what true love can accomplish if it is, in fact, as true as it seems. She must have a bleeding heart that is exposed at all times. She is the embodiment of love.

AGWE - African-American Male, 25-60 yrs old. Bass/Baritone. God of Water. Larger than life with a very commanding presence. Mysterious. Requires a very strong singer with a dramatic voice and big range; Agwe is unpredictable, and responsible for flooding the island and often destroying the crops that Asaka helped create. He is as playful as he is malicious, creating the conditions that cause Daniel to crash his car. Agwe finds Ti Moune and her plight “interesting.”

ASAKA – African-American Female, 30-50 yrs old. Mezzo-Soprano with powerful gospel belt. Mother of the Earth. Strong and sassy with strong stage presence. Asaka provides the rich earth to grow crops and is considered a generous god by the peasants. She and Agwe do not get along very often, and they are at odds with each other much of the time. She does believe that people are much better off when they have sense and do not live in fantasy as Ti Moune does, but she finds Ti Moune and her love for Daniel “amusing.”

PAPA GE – African-American Male, 30-50 yrs old. Tenor. God of Death. Antagonist to the other Gods. Embodying the fears of all the peasants, he is a powerful and terrifying figure looming over the island. Papa Ge takes pleasure in death and suffering. He is a wily, cruel demon-god. He plans to take Daniel Beauxhomme’s life, but he is stopped for awhile by Ti Moune and her promise to the other gods. He watches the relationship between Ti Moune and Daniel like a greedy vulture, waiting for his chance to take Daniel’s life. He considers all lives to belong to him, as eventually rich and poor alike will have to die. He does have a soft side, though it is seldom seen.

MAMA EURALIE – African-American Female, 40-60 yrs old. Alto. Peasant farmer. Ti Moune’s adoptive mother. She is protective, superstitious, fiercely loving and strong willed, her similarities often lead to clashes with Ti Moune. Euralie harbors a strong belief in the gods, and believes that Ti Moune was spared by the gods for a reason. She supports and loves Ti Moune, but she also wants Ti Moune to see things the way they are in the real world and stop living in a fantasy. This actress must be an incredible one. Often this role makes little to no impact and we need to see the mother that is torn between wanting to see her child explore the world, but devastated to lose them, and wanting to see them fly on their own. When Ti Moune dies we need to see utter devastation of losing a child.

This is the moment is when time stops. There is also a special relationship between an adoptive parent and child, especially if she always wanted children and feels the gods blessed her with one at such a late time in life. Ti Moune would be her everything.

TONTON JULIAN – African-American Male, 40-60 yrs old. Baritone. Peasant farmer. Tonton is a French affectionate term for Uncle. He is Ti Moune’s adoptive father, and from him she has learned the sacrificial love she demonstrates later. Sterner than Euralie, but has just as much affection for Ti Moune. Like all the peasants, he believes in the gods, but he is more skeptical of their involvement than Euralie. He is proud of his simple life, and wants Ti Moune to keep her head out of the clouds and

also be proud of her simple life. This actor must be an incredible one. Often this role makes little to no impact and we need to see the father that is torn between wanting to see his child explore the world, but devastated to lose them, and wanting to see them fly on their own. Ti Moune would be their everything.

ANDREA – African-American Female, 20-30 yrs old. Soprano. The well-to-do fiancée of Daniel. She hides her coldness and disdain for peasants behind niceties. She does not much care for Ti Moune, though she is willing to let her stay as a servant and a dancer because Daniel likes her. She considers all peasants to be far beneath her, as if they are not even from the same world. She pities Ti Moune, but despite having little affection for Daniel, she will not allow sentiment to interfere with her well- ordered plan for marriage. She is a gorgeous woman that should be very graceful and striking to look at.

ARMAND – African-American Male, 40-60 yrs old. Baritone. Daniel’s stern father. Armand is the ambitious but careless Frenchman who first came to the island. He built a great fortune and had massive wealth and wants to be sure his son carries on the family legacy. He enjoys driving peasants away, and he distrusts Ti Moune immensely and would be only too glad to be able to get rid of her.

YOUNG TI MOUNE – African-American Female, 6-10 yrs old. Energetic, confident, and sweet with a strong speaking and singing voice.
