PREPARATION

Please prepare two contrasting monologues or one monologue and one song selection. Audition should not exceed three minutes total. Bring sheet music in the proper key, plus your headshot and resume stapled together.

CHARLOTTE SANDERS – Female, 50s to 60s, a successful Broadway playwright, smart resourceful, optimistic

OLIVER ADAMS – Male, 21 years old, a young novelist, handsome, full of promise, still unsure of himself

ARTHUR SANDERS – Male, 50s to 60s, Charlotte’s husband and co-playwright, an adorable curmudgeon, pessimist to her optimist

OLGA MOLNAR – Female, 40s to 70s, the Housekeeper, from the Old Country, thick accent, a dark view of the world

MARGOT BELL – Female, mid-20s, a Broadway singer and actress, beautiful, effortlessly successful in her career

SEEKING:

DR. HENRY JEKYLL – Male, 30s-50s, A brilliant, educated man, Jekyll is a highly ethical man and seeks to control humanity’s, and his own, darker urges.

ELIZABETH JELKES – Female, late 20s-40s, Elizabeth is the object of Hyde’s lusts, a bold and tender woman.

GABRIEL UTTERSON/ SURGICAL STUDENT 2/ HYDE 1 – Male or Female, age 30s-50s. Utterson is a general solicitor and Jekyll’s friend, a keen observer who is troubled by the appearance of Mr. Hyde. Also doubles as Hyde.

SIR DANVERS CAREW/ O.F. SANDERSON/ RICHARD ENFIELD/ INSPECTOR/HYDE 2 – Male, 40s-60s. Carew is the chief surgeon of the College of London hospital; a corrupt, sadistic man who is Jekyll’s professional foe. Sanderson is a Personal Enquiries Agent; Enfield is a friend of Jekyll and Utterson. Also doubles as Hyde.

DR. H. K. LANYON/ SURGICAL STUDENT 1/ HOTEL PORTER / HYDE 3 – Male, 30s-50s. Dr. Lanyon is Jekyll’s friend and a practicing physician, a Scotsman with an exuberant laugh. Doubles for the majority of the play as Hyde, a monstrous man in appearance and manner.

POOLE/ POLICE DOCTOR/ PROSTITUTE/ MAID/ OLD WOMAN/ HYDE 4 – Female, 30s-50s. Poole is Jekyll’s attentive butler. The Prostitute, Old Woman, and Maid all have varying encounters with Hyde. Also doubles as Mr. Hyde.

INTIMATE APPAREL

ESTHER – 30s, Female, African-American, a driven and passionate seamstress in New York who specializes in delicate lingerie.

MRS. DICKSON – 50s, Female, African-American, a widowed woman. Mrs. Dickson owns the boarding house where Esther lives.

MRS. VAN BUREN – 30s, Female, white American, wealthy woman who lives on Fifth Avenue and is a client of Esther’s.

MR. MARKS – Male, 30s, Romanian Jewish immigrant, a fabric salesman who regards Esther as his favorite customer and is devout to his religion.

MAYME – 30s, Female, African-American, a prostitute who lives in the Tenderloin District, and a friend and customer to Esther. She is also a talented piano player.

GEORGE – 30s, Male, Barbadian immigrant, a man who works on the Panama Canal and writes letters to Esther.

SEEKING:

BERNARD - Male, mid-late 40s. Jacqueline's husband. He’s a not-so-faithful husband who’s planning a weekend with his mistress, Suzanne, at his home in the country. Eager to please and not make waves but longs for excitement and the way attention from the opposite sex makes him feel.

JACQUELINE - Female, 30s - 40s. Bernard's wife. A not-so-faithful wife but ultimately loves Bernard. Likes things the way she likes them and is strong willed.

ROBERT - Male, mid-late 40s. Bernard's single friend and Jacqueline's lover. As Bernard’s alibi, he gets tangled up in his own affair, stumbling into a number of lies in an attempt to get what he wants without destroying his friendship. Ever so slightly bumbling but has an honest heart.

SUZETTE - Female, late 20s - 40s. George’s wife. She is a Cordon Bleu, private cook. She is a quirky plain Jane who later transforms into a rather flamboyant mistress.

SUZANNE - Female, late 30s - 40s. She’s a bombshell, and she’s Bernard's mistress. Though she’s a model and actress, she’s forced to play the cook upon her arrival to the country home.

GEORGE - Male 20s - 40s. Suzette’s husband and a man of intimidating stature. He is jealous and very protective of his wife. However, he is more brawn than brain.
