BREAKDOWN
Notes on My Mother’s Decline is the story of a mother and a son. The son, a new father himself,
struggles to write about, and cope with, his mother’s ongoing illness and their difficult relationship. The
son examines and considers his mother’s life, and explores their contentious relationship. The mother, a native of Mississippi who moved to New York in the late fifties, is bedridden, spending her days chain-smoking, napping, chatting on the phone, and talking to her home health aide. The narrator, by placing a close lens upon his mother, and envisioning her day-to-day existence, is forced to deal with his own judgments and fears, and to be confronted, ultimately, with the deeper, uglier truths of their relationship. A New York story, set in the East Village, Andy Bragen’s autobiographical play explores with sly wit and bold honesty the ways we care for those we love, and what it takes to live with—and without—them.

MOTHER: (70’s female; any ethnicity)
Originally from the south, but in New York for nearly fifty years. Bedridden, yet emotionally and verbally powerful, with a sharp tongue. Her vulnerabilities emerge, occasionally, despite her best efforts to conceal them behind stories, humor, and a biting wit.

SON: (40’s Male; any ethnicity)
A writer, and native New Yorker. A sense of humor, and irony; an observant, distancing eye that
sometimes betrays him. He is a narrator who is at times unreliable to himself, will discover that the
story he is telling is not the one he thinks it is. His emotions are not foregrounded, but sneak up upon him.
