BAGGE: 33, male, scientist: The youngest in the group. A hysteric and obsessive eater. Was a member of the Nazi party. A very smart mathematician; emotionally an adolescent.

KORSCHING: 33, male, scientist: A cynic. Habitually undercuts pretensions. Aware of his dashing good looks. Out for himself.

GERLACH: 56, male, scientist: In way over his head. Knows he's mediocre as an administrator. Escapes through his gardening.

WIRTZ: 35, male, scientist: A wheeler-dealer who will work for anyone as long as it's good for him.

HARTECK: 43, male, scientist: The most easy-going and laid back of the group. He's more an engineer than a scientist and goes with the flow.

HEISENBERG: 44, male, scientist: Nobel Prize winner. Considers himself the leader of the group. Passionately concerned about maintaining his own reputation.

VON WEIZSACKER: 33, male, scientist: Son of a high ranking Nazi diplomat. His success is based on his discipleship with Heisenberg.

HAHN: 66, male, scientist: Also an elder statesman in science. Crippled by the moral ambiguity of his discovery of fission and the publication of the results. Wants to escape the responsibility for his work through any justification he can find.

RITTNER: early 40’s, male: British, cool, publicly cordial, has to sit on his own hatred of all of the internees.
