BREAKDOWN

NEWSIES

Jack
Male, 17-22, any ethnicity. Handsome, passionate and charismatic leader of the Newsies. A street-smart kid with a dark artistic soul right beneath the bluster. Not a blowhard. This kid's the real thing. Must have a great pop tenor voice.

Davey:
Male, 16-21, any ethnictiy. A thinker. Raised in a home as opposed to the other Newsies, Davie is the book-smart counterpoint to the other boys. The voice of reason. A nice Jewish boy. Must have a great contemporary tenor voice.

Les:
Male, 10-12, any ethnicity. The fearless kid brother of Davey. Excited by everything the world has to offer and eager to join in the adventure. Fun is this kid's middle name. Must sing really well.

Joseph Pulitzer:
40s – 50’s, any ethnicity. The boisterous forefather of Wm. F. Buckley Jr, Glenn Beck and Rupert Murdoch. An on point, know it all, politician. Impolite and impatient with the world. Must sing well.

Katherine Plumber:
Female, 17-22, any ethnicity. The strong willed daughter of Pulitzer. This young lady drips smarts, opinions and confidence. A young Katherine Hepburn or Ellen Page. This damsel needs no prince to save her. Must have a great pop/contemporary musical theater voice with a high belt.

Crutchie:
Male, 17-22. Any ethnicity. A slight, sickly boy with a huge heart. He walks with the aid of a crutch due to a bad leg, but that doesn't hold him back from being right in the middle of any mischief. A real charmer.

Medda:
Female, 40’s to 60’s, African-American. The big voiced saloon singer and star of the Bowery offers her theatre as a safe haven for Jack and the newsies. She stands behind them in their fight for justice. A vaudeville star of the Bowery variety. Risque, tough, with a big voice and GREAT comic delivery.

Young Emilio/Nayib:
Male, 12, Cuban, Emilio as a boy and Nayib Gloria’s son, straightforward, determined, strong, must speak/learn Spanish

Gloria Estefan:
Female, 20-30, Cuban, initially shy, opens up as the story progresses, becomes an icon, sharp sense of humor, good actress, must speak fluent Spanish and sing & dance well.

Emilio Estefan:
Male, 30-40, Cuban, confident, handsome, sometimes stumbles over his emotions...and his English; loyal, leading man with character, must speak/learn Spanish and sing well

Gloria Fajardo:
Female, 50-60, Cuban, Gloria’s mother, brassy, strong-willed, matriarch, survivor, biting humor, must speak/learn Spanish and sing well.

Consuelo:
Female, 65-75, Cuban, Gloria’s grandmother, Cuban stage mother, wise, loving, warm, Gloria’s guardian angel, must speak/learn Spanish and be able sing

Young Gloria:
Female, 10-12, Cuban, innocent, but smart and self-reliant; slightly sad, but full of hope, must speak/learn Spanish and sing well.
